I know

Its the best place to go to see how name combinations work though.......if you are not easily spooked!

helsy · 07/11/2006 20:26

My sister was named after a tin of sardines my mum saw on a supermarket shelf and no, she's not called John West. I don't think they're around now. Pretty name, though.

Dd1 was named very quickly when the nurse told us my mum had arrived, because we knew if we told her she didn't have a name she would decide for us! Her first name is my sister's middle name, and her middle name is my mum's maiden name. Dd2 was named after my best friend and her middle name is DH's close friend who died just before dd2 was born.

Due date was 28th of December, so was thinking of suitably festive names, for a dd had 2 names-a christmas one if born in December, or Maria if born in January. Dd was born on Christmas Day (and if she'd been a boy, I wanted to call him Christmas - Kit for short. Or Balthazar.
(not true about Balthazar, BTW)

VeniVidiVickiQV · 07/11/2006 20:30

So, is it Holly?
Ivy?
Belle?
Tinsel?
Bauble?
Fairy?
Lametta?
Mary?
Mistletoe?

C'mon - what festive name did you give her

Tex111 · 07/11/2006 20:33

DS - first name is just a name that we liked, middle name is my father's name and an old family name on DH's side.

DD - first name is a flower name following in the tradition of my MIL and her sisters. It's a 'rose' name like MIL's but not the same name. DD's middle name is my mother and sister's middle name.

We also wanted to give the children rather grand christian names that have cute nicknames so they would have some flexibilty. We ended up with a Tobias (Toby) and a Rosamund (Rosie).

SSSandy · 07/11/2006 20:33

I have a Spanish friend called Natividad. Is that one your choices?

I REALLY REALLY want to know the name of the girl that came off the tin of sardines.

puppydavies · 07/11/2006 20:34

foxinsocks, your dd is called georgia

thanks to this thread i have firm plans to name my currently gestating child figroll.

Tex111 · 07/11/2006 20:36

I was named after a girl my parents' babysat.

My brother was named after a bull rider that my mom fancied!

My sister was named after a soap actress. Mom thought she was having a boy and didn't come up with any girl names. After sis was born Mom was watching a soap in the hospital and just picked the name of the main actress.

GarfieldsGirl · 07/11/2006 20:37

ds1 - after a footballer (although it was one of my shortlisted names from about 14). Middle name after a boxer because of his clenched fists!

ds2 - Was the 1st name that we both agreed on after habing spent all night throwing silly names around. Middle name was chosen by ds1 (after a tank engine!)

Both are names that can't be shortened. If we'd let ds1 choose ds2's 1st name he would have been called Pillow.

admylin · 07/11/2006 20:39

We had to find names that didn't sound silly in England, Germany and India which both families could pronounce.
I came up with lots of nice names for ds but as he has about 16 aunts and uncles and 20 odd cousins they were mostly all taken.
For dd I wanted her name even though dh's niece had a dd the same week and named her the same, she lives in Canada and we haven't met them yet - with such big families they rarely all meet up anyway so I insisted on having that name too.

Zippetydoodahzippetyday · 07/11/2006 20:42

Was railroaded into DD's name by everyone in the family and so just gave in.

With DS, DP and I were insistent and stuck with what WE liked not what the whole family liked.

CatBert · 07/11/2006 20:43

My DDs (names) were both engaged to Bertie Wooster at some point... Loved them

helsy · 07/11/2006 20:45

Betty, did you call her Cliff? Or Noel?

Wilbur · 07/11/2006 20:47

I chose ds1's name when I was about 13 - it was mentioned in two books I loved - My Family and Other Animals and The Midwitch Cuckoos and I also really love the meaning of it. Dd was pretty much the only girl's name dh and I could decide on and ds2 has a name that rhymes with the name I really wanted which dh outlawed because he knew a boy at school with that name who was a drip. Middle names are all family names - ds1 is dh's grandfather, dd is my mother and ds2 is my grandfather and my father's middle name. When you put them all together they go well but the dss are a bit mad and frou frou and dd is more conventional. I loved the choosing though, and at some point will have to get some pets so I can use up all the surplus baby names I love.

puppydavies · 07/11/2006 20:53

catbert - do your dds begin with m & f? if so, lovely names

foundintranslation · 07/11/2006 21:03

ds's first name is biblical. dh and I both hit upon the name independently after we had found out we were having a boy and had really struggled with boys' names. One interpretation of its meaning is 'God has heard'.
He has two middle names. The first one is my dad's name and the second one is what we would have called him if we hadn't hit upon what became his first name.

If the second baby we hope for is a girl, she will have a variant of dh's grandmother's name, then a friend's name and a name we both like. We have several boys' names we like, but we haven't settled completely on them yet. (Am NOT pg atm!)

DumbledoresGirl · 07/11/2006 21:17

puppydavies lol. No, not Shula!

bettythebuilder · 07/11/2006 21:40

Now I'm wishing I asked for mumsnetters advice before naming dd - she'd be Lametta Cliff Noel

As it is, she's green and prickly, and I'm really hoping she never falls in love with a Mr Bush or Mr Day...

VeniVidiVickiQV · 07/11/2006 21:51

or Mr Stick

VeniVidiVickiQV · 07/11/2006 21:52

or Mr Moley

OR Mr Shit for that matter.....

bettythebuilder · 07/11/2006 21:54

... I avoided 'pogo' for that very reason..

Is the biscuit Dai Gestive?

Linnet · 07/11/2006 22:03

For dd1's name Dh had overheard a man in a restaurant talking to his dd and thought her name was nice so that was what we called our dd when she arrived. when she was born it was quite unusual but now there is an actress with the same name it's becomming quite popular.

Dd2, her name was decided before we'd even agreed that we'd have another baby. I had a boys name all picked out and wasn't budging if I had a boy so Dh suggested a girls name which I also happened to like. So when dd2 arrived that was her name.

neither of my girls have middle names, I don't have a middle name either.

expatinscotland · 07/11/2006 22:05

DD1 had no name for 4 days.

Then a midwife said, 'If you ask me, she looks a wee [insert name]'

And she did.

She suits her name to a T.

DD2 is named after DH's much loved maternal Nana.

LemonTart · 07/11/2006 22:06

my girls have their own first names and family middle names - names that conincided with both families to avoid any fighting with the grannies!!!

Gingerbear · 07/11/2006 22:16

I picked a traditional, strong name for DD (same as joolstoo) her middle name was a 'gas and air moment'
Although we did have about 4 names for her, couldn't decide, and she was nameless for a week.
For this one, I am trying to make a list of girls' names, we definitely have a boy's name, but girls are harder.
