Ds - a name I have always loved. No thought required at all. Also my grandmother's name was the feminine version of it, so it is special in that way. Middle name is my dad's name.

Dd - ds chose it (his first choice was Mother Hubbard, but we liked his second choice better). Middle name is dh's grandmother's name.

When dd1 was on the way, we decided we wanted an Irish name for her. We had honeymooned there and at that point were still considering moving there. We gave her a "traditional English" middle name so that she had an alternative if she decided she hated her unusual name.

Dd2 - named after a surviving conjoined twin from Ireland. Again, trad English name as an alternative.

We then moved to Scotland and - hey presto! The dd's names were no longer "what?" names any more! They are names popular in Scotland as well as Ireland.

Then had ds - it was really hard choosing a boy's name but we settled on a very popular one that we really liked. He got a Scottish(ish) middle name too.

We steered clear of "family" names - there are several on both sides of the family, none of which we liked, and we would be bound to upset somebody

cece · 07/11/2006 19:38

DD - my gran suggested it and we liked it.... Middle name family name

DS - was a compromise as DH and I have very different views on boys nmaes. It was basically the only one we could agree on..middle names, family names

Tiggerish · 07/11/2006 19:57

ds was named after one of the first students I ever taught - he was very intelligent, good looking etc.... Loved the name and particularly the spelling. his middle name is dh's first name.

dd's name was one we both liked and dh got the final say from the 3 we had chosen. her middle name is an adaptation of a family name that has been used for 8 generations. It has traditionally been used as a first name but we changed it slightly and used it as a middle one.

Our favourite song is Layla - DH said Layla was a bit pretentious so its a variation of that.

Ds came at a time when our marriage was not good. He came and somehow made us better people so his name means "Gift from God", and his middle name is my fathers name. My father was dying of cancer when I found out I was pregnant, and the last conversation I knew he understood was when I told him I was pg.

puppydavies · 07/11/2006 20:06

lol, i'm having fun playing guess the name.

bourbon? digestive? jammie dodger? stop me when i'm getting warm

am utterly stumped by being named after a keyring though

dd is named after a rock musician and a character in a sitcom (both male).

SSSandy · 07/11/2006 20:08

Ds came with a name, although we changed it very slightly when we adopted him as it was a little girly to start with (he was named after his birth grandmother). We had been in two minds about whether to change it or not, but people would regularly assume he was a girl because of the name so we thought it would be easier for him in the future to have a boy's name for forms etc. We also gave him my father's first name as a middle name and his birth surname as a second middle name.

puppydavies · 07/11/2006 20:15

kimi, are you a bloke called gary baldy?

redsky · 07/11/2006 20:16

We hadn't agreed on a name for ds but thought that once he was born inspiration would strike - but it didn't. After 5 days I said we HAD to come up with a name. Dh suggested Martin which I thought ok'ish and dh didn't like any of my suggestions so it stayed. Ds is 19 - and has always liked his name luckily!

Dd was easier - we knew she was a girl and had 3 or 4 names we both really liked. I really really wanted one of her names to be Elizabeth. As soon as she was born dh decided she suited the first name that was top of my list followed by Elizabeth. I was sooooooo pleased - it is the ONLY time I've ever known dh agree with a suggestion of mine.

puppydavies · 07/11/2006 20:16

madeleine!

bran · 07/11/2006 20:16

I was assuming that kimi has an Irish connection and was named Kimberly after a very popular biscuit there.

Altogether now
"Kimberly, Mikado and Coconut Cream
Someone you love would love some one."

(I may have the wrong, the syntax seems quite odd.)

Quootiepie · 07/11/2006 20:18

1st Name - dont know. We just really liked it, he suited it... he just was a XXXXXXXXXXX

Middle name 1: He was due on this saints day, and its Irish Honouring heritage

Middle name 2: means Gods gift, and he was a gift from God

puppydavies · 07/11/2006 20:21

fair do's, that's one hell of a biscuit

biscuit of the week

foxinsocks · 07/11/2006 20:22

dd's name is from a Gladys Knight and the Pips song that came on just as I was about to go to hospital because she hadn't moved all day (in the womb) - she then started dancing around and the name went on our list and we both loved it so stuck with it

ds's name is the name of a guitarist with dh's favourite band - but it was also the one and only boy's name that both dh and I could agree upon.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 07/11/2006 20:23

Saw it in a lovely combination on a memorial plaque at a crematorium for DD.

DS - always loved his first name and DP wanted to continue the family tradition with his middle name.

SSSandy · 07/11/2006 20:24

memorial plaque at a crematorium - unusual

VeniVidiVickiQV · 07/11/2006 20:25

COV - I love your DS's name. Its pretty unusual too these days.
