I knew a girl from HK who'd chosen "Fanny" for her westernised name. I don't think anyone ever told her her the other meaning....

Peridot - do you remember a singer called Randy Van Warmer? Conjures up all sorts of images!

Daisybelle · 09/11/2006 15:15

I think I should say that, not only do I fail to understand why people felt the need to adopt a westernised name, you would have thought that, as you say LunarSea, someone would tell them!

You think Randy is good, try this, a very dear friend from school - and now - goes thru life with his dad introducing himself as Dick. Surname? Mussel!

bellarosa · 09/11/2006 20:24

I've got a made up first name and double barrelled surname and once took someone to court for taking the piss out of it... and i won lots of money! it's not all bad being the one with the silly name!

Bucketsofburntdinosaurs · 09/11/2006 23:11

Nice one Bellarosa

Fanny was very popular in my country during the 1970s. I had a friend and a dog with that name.

threelittlebangers · 11/11/2006 00:23

Have to add the names of a large family my friend was just telling me about- they are:

girls
Fudge(!) Tulsa Candy Gail
boys
Blue, Toby, Pacer-Joe (pron. Peacer)and Jesus (pron. Jesus, no really)

Not saying that all the names are "different" but what a collection, wonder what made them choose Jesus, on the one hand, and then an ordinary nice name like Toby? Ditto Fudge and Gail?

hamstermunker · 11/11/2006 00:27

I am almost 100% sure that I heard a little boy being referred to as "Avon" on Monday.

I was a nursery teacher in NZ for many years and in case any of my old mums are reading I am only listing them because they are unusual, every single one of these children suited their names
Clishea (said Cliche)
Jah Kahn
Phenuus (said Phen u us)
Chayetia (Shay tia)
Dhontayne
There were others but I just cant remember them any more....

hamstermunker · 11/11/2006 18:48

Not sure, Lockets - my first thought was "ding-dong"!

McWitch · 11/11/2006 18:49

hamstermunker · 11/11/2006 18:51

Bucketsofburntdinosaurs, I don't know if anyone has responded to this but the name Amani is arabic and means gift of god. It may have been that rather than Armani the 70's hair care product.

parkj83 · 12/11/2006 14:49

My sister has called her 2nd ds

Hugh
Wendryn
Tresinian
Godolphin

And the surname is Jenkyn

I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when she came out with that - in fact, she didn't want to tell me.

She has a husband who is more than a bit weird - her 1st ds's names are linked to 2nd ds's names -

George
Henry
William
Thomas

Some are surnames, and the Wendryn bit is the saint of the church where she got married in Helston, Cornwall. (She lives in Swindon)

All daft ideas from this post come from her obsessed husband. (I don't like him, in case you hadn't guessed! Nor do we get on)

hamstermunker · 13/11/2006 11:39

Ah well, he'll learn to fight quite early.

calebsmum · 13/11/2006 23:12

My friends baby is called Ashton-Brae which I really like.

My old teacher was called Storm Blue and it suited her.

Little girl at DS playgroup called Monet, lovely name.
