Peachyclair...We thought about Stirling for our DS. Hubby a big Velvet Underground fan and no way was I going for Louis.

We also thought about Virgil (to be known as Gus) as his dad claims his brother named him after a thunderbird. I quite liked it.

However, before he was concived we loved and bestowed him with the name Edgar. It suits him.

Zephyr Artemisia Ahriman Vulcan Kelsey and Tintin Java Rocket - it's like throwing darts at a cd and film collection and using the whatever words they land in!

Zig-a-Zig Fandango Reservoir Moonshine anyone?

Blandmum · 07/11/2006 15:05

I have always been very fond of the word Plinth

Plinth Bishop

And zygote, what a great word!

Zygote Bishop

ginmummy · 07/11/2006 15:08

I like the words 'spunk' and 'rhubarb' - now that would make a fantastic name!

(I'm demob happy now - it's just over an hour till hometime)

PeachyClair · 07/11/2006 16:05

We should have named Stirling grimmer. , more appropriate today.

I gopt bullied with a really common first and last name )no middle) and yet the kids have never ahd a joke about Peach.... not sure what that proves though

Dh wanted to call Samuel Anakin. I said No. Bt DS3 has crud middle anmes- harold jarvis griffith peach. griffith because it is my Grandad's surname and it died out with the genration, Jarvis for Jarvis Cocker DH still hasn't forgiven me LOL

goblinqueen · 07/11/2006 16:06

nogoes, I know someone online who changed her name to Squirrel by deed poll! Gotta be the same person you'd think! Tho I never heard the Le Bon bit!

My son's name was originally the name of the main character of a fantasy fiction novel hubs was going to write! Consequently, I don't tend to participate in these kinds of threads ;o) Most people say they think it's unusual, but nice though I'm sure they're being polite ;o) We gave him a thoroughly normal middle name just in case!

nogoes · 08/11/2006 09:42

goblinqueen - Is she or was she in South East London. If so pretty sure it's the same one!

goblinqueen · 08/11/2006 11:14

nogoes - definitely London, but I'm not sure what area but it must be!

2ManyPimms · 08/11/2006 12:17

DD goes to school with a "Molly Moo". Too bovine for words!!!

I'd give you MHO on unusual names but I'd be flamed.

Mummymonster · 09/11/2006 09:32

I work in the realm of childcare and I am aware you have to keep your opinions to yourself but sometimes you stand there and think...and that child has to live with that for the rest of their life!

I confess I would make an awful registrar...'and that's the name you want is it?...would you like to go away and think about it?

An Ex colleague told me that in France a child's name has to be picked from an approved list! Bit draconian that tho

Tommy · 09/11/2006 09:56

LOL Mummymonster - when we went to register DS1 (2 biblical names - not unusual or anything) the Registra said "Traditional spelling?" and we said yes, she said " lovely " - and looked very chuffed - I think she'd had enough of the unusual ones by that stage!

Mummymonster · 09/11/2006 10:29

Same here Tommy, when we went to register DS the lovely registrar (who didn't bat an eyelid that I was BFing under my shirt throughout) said 'oh how nice, we don't hear the old names that often anymore'

It was nice to make her day

Hi

I have enjoyed reading through this thread. Just wondering if anyone posting or reading these has read Freakanomics? Very interesting stuff in there on names - like a test done in the states where 2 identical CVs were sent to apply for a number of jobs - One with a regular Christian name and one with a HipHop kind of unique/unusual name - guess which got the interviews!! The book asks the question, why do parents activily disadvantage their children in the workplace through the names that they give them... Interesting thought - book also includes examples of twins - Lemon Jello and Orange Jello (pron. Le Mongelo) and also a girl named Shi'teed - written shithead...

lostincornwall · 09/11/2006 12:43

When I lived in Dubai a colleague called their son Jesus Christ Mercedes Benz - so that he could have the best of the material and the spiritual world. Bless!

suzywong · 09/11/2006 12:44

that is pure genius

A friend's cousin got married to an American ice-hockey player & they named their sons Beefy and Ice......! I also heard "come 'ere, London" shouted in Tesco a few months back... classy

Daisybelle · 09/11/2006 13:59

As a supply teacher I have come across some truely wonderful names. The most memorable was Xa-Zurae. Pretty, tho unusual, but no one ever knew how to pronounce it! (Zay-Zuray incase you're wondering) Her little sister was called Sherazwala (sp?) and they were youngest 2 of 7, all with ... unusual names!

Peridot30 · 09/11/2006 14:09

My friend married an American and was introduced to a RANDY!! Couldn't look at the guy without giggling. Just being immature.

Bucketsofburntdinosaurs · 09/11/2006 14:29

In Hong Kong people choose their own Western names for international use because the family name goes first in Chinese which confuses everyone else. A HK colleague of mine told me about a school friend who became American Express Lam (I just made up the surname there). They all called him Amex.

Daisybelle · 09/11/2006 14:39

i know what you mean about HK. There used to be a lady working in a McDonalds who had chosen the name 'Fork'.
