I have a friend visiting who breast feeds her 1yr old son. As he is not with her on this trip she has had to express some off. Should she have thrown away her milk or fed it to my 5week old son.

It doesn't quite sit right with us but we can't really say why.

Yes, it changes.

It doesn't become lemonade though, ffs.

And if it changed into something that a newborn shouldn't have I WOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO DONATE IT, WOULD I?!!!!!!

FGS

3andnomore · 29/10/2006 00:22

d and v...what is that...sorry to be thick

hairymclary · 29/10/2006 00:22

yeah but we all know that most HV's talk out of their arses don't we? lol

I would imagine that's a dehydration thing maybe? but impairing insomuch as it may affect your supply or something, not that it would make the milk bad for your baby.

hunkermunker · 29/10/2006 00:22

I MAY LEAVE CAPS LOCK ON...

Actually, I won't.

Just imagine that I'm posting with it on, please, when I write the following...

QHY in the name of all things holy would a D&V bug mean you shouldn't bfeed your baby?

AND...still in Caps, if you will...

Your HV told you?! Because they are all SO well-informed and gospel-spouting, right?

jampots · 29/10/2006 00:23

in answer to original post - thrown it away

hairymclary · 29/10/2006 00:23

oh HM we're singing from the same song sheet again aren't we? lol

hunkermunker · 29/10/2006 00:23

Yes, indeedy

QuootieSpookypie · 29/10/2006 00:24

sorry, i was just saying She said it was the only thing...

hairymclary · 29/10/2006 00:24

also i just want to repeat this from 3andnomore, just in case it was missed as it's a good point

'By 3andnomore on Sunday, 29 October, 2006 12:04:31 AM
But then, I have been ill with a bug when my son was only lil the thing is that protects is, that whilest you may have the bug in your system and even milk you also produce all teh antobodys...so, indeed one does a Baby a favour to feed them whilest oe is ill!'

hairymclary · 29/10/2006 00:25

quootie don't be sad! we aren't cross with you, just with the bad, bad HV's who give such awful advice.
it's sad actually. it's not surprising so many people give up breastfeeding

hunkermunker · 29/10/2006 00:25

Sorry, Quootie.

I'd not turned "rant mode" off...

3andnomore · 29/10/2006 00:25

doh, diarhoea and vomiting...got it!
Anyway, that HV would indeed talk out of her you know what, lol!
Afterall, undernourished 3 world women succesful breastfeed...it's more of what we class an aceptable gap between bf's...as most Hv's and lots of other people tend to think regular and more the regular feeding shows insufficient supply, which of course we know is tosh in most cases!

QuootieSpookypie · 29/10/2006 00:27

that HV was really good might not have been the actual BFing with d & v, but, i did ask if it was ok to bf with a cold when she said it... she said only thing you'd have to worry about was d & v

sorrell · 29/10/2006 00:28

Hvs know nothing about breastfeeding. Human milk is perfect for human babies. THis thread is very, very strange.
As for the 'deadly breastmilk' hypothesis...well..

sorrell · 29/10/2006 00:28

Mind you, very odd OP as well.

3andnomore · 29/10/2006 00:32

lol Q...but like you leanred jsut no, she was talking tosh no matter how good she was otherwise, and of course many hv's do have their good points and indeed some are brilliant altogehter...my one in Melton Mowbray area was a ex NCT BF cuncillor, so superb
Also, a lot of HV like to think that giving a Baby water or dirolyte (sp?) is better if the Kids has D&V...again tosh, bm counts as clear fluid and is fantasitically at combatting anything Also there is the fantastic thing that if your Baby has a bug it's prominent in their spit and when they bf on you they actually transfer that bacci and your Body creates anitbodys to give to your child, now that is wuite cool technology right

hunkermunker · 29/10/2006 00:34

I'm still utterly amazed that that happens, 3andnomore - it's magic!

QuootieSpookypie · 29/10/2006 00:39

Hopefully BFing will clear DSs cold, then at least one of us will be well

3andnomore · 29/10/2006 00:51

it is, isn't hunker...bm is so much more amazing then people are willing to give it credit for!

3andnomore · 29/10/2006 00:52

Q, squirting some bm up your lil obes nose will work a treat too, and is certainly better then any other nosedrops!

I was told not to BF when I has chicken pox. I have to express milk off for 2 weeks before I could feed DD again.

No I am not one for FF?cows milk!
I wanted to BF DSs but xp1 would not let me!! I BF DD though

I am all for BF and the FF feeding only if its a have too!

I have just been to many sites and I could be here forever with 1s that say with me and others that say with others.

I think we could be here for years with the ones that say yes and the ones that say no.
I would not want to give my DC at 5 weeks old, someone else milk without it being tested first! As for the goodness of the ages of milk is yet to be really found out. Just the diet alone can make milk change in its goodness!

hunkermunker · 29/10/2006 00:58

Quantify "goodness", please, Hazelnuts.

And you got the wrong information for when you had chicken pox, I'm afraid

sorrell · 29/10/2006 00:59

HH, I realise you mean well, but you are absolutely, factually wrong in what you post. There is no reason on earth why you should throw away milk when you have chicken pox. It is not transmitted through breastmilk. Almost nothing but HIV is transmitted through breastmilk. I feel very sad you got that advice.
Breastmilk does not become inadequate because you change your diet. Really, it doesn't.

3andnomore · 29/10/2006 01:00

Hazelnut, who told you to stop bf with chicken pox?
