How do I go about getting a book published

I've been toying with the idea of writing a book (non-fiction, something that doesn't appear to be out there, but part of a popular genre) but before even starting I'm wondering if it will ever get to the publishing stage. Does anyone know the process and how long/difficult it is? Not having that much time as a SAHM I was thinking of dedicating my [precious] evenings to this venture, but would hate it to fail at the first hurdle after all that personal investment. Any advice would be appreciated.

It is very difficult to get things published, after all if it was that easy, everyone would do it - but don't let that idea stop you.

Write your book first as this is the biggest challenge (especially with kids around!) Then you can either search through for publishers who except unsolicited manuscripts or find an agent.

If you have the right subject for non-fiction, it will do very well - but make sure you do your research.

Hope this helps.

ps...I'm a publisher

Get the Writers and Artists Yearbook - lots of vital information.

I think ggglimpopo is a published author. Start a thread for her perhaps. I could be totally wrong though but i'm sure she is.

Thanks all for the advice. I will also look for a copy of the Yearbook.

Well, I have the framework done... I guess I'll give it a go and see if I really have the time for it now. Thanks again

I've worked in publishing too

It's practically impossible to get a book published

And you will need to write it first

Writing it is the easy part

But if you really want to write it, then do so, but don't do it thinking that it will be a money spinner, because probably 99% of written books aren't

good luck!

What sort of cut does everyone else take? What are you left with? [I was hoping it would bring something in.... eventually]
