Towcester is about 8 miles south of Northampton, nice market town that has grown and sprawled a bit, not many bad areas, lots of ok estates, it's a while since I lived near there but the schools are good. Further south is Brackley which is a hop from the M40 and has a similar feel.

Northampton is a real mix, even NN3 - there are some fabulous half million pound plus houses in NN3, but also some really rough areas. Best seconary schools in Northampton are the single sex schools or Caroline Chisholm which is a through school.
