Having just watched the end of the Channel 4 best albums of all time, dh and I were discussing how upsetting we find it if someone we love admits to liking U2 and how it devalues them in our eyes TOTALLY irrational I know

So...

Getting back to the irrational theme: people who can't spell. This is irrational as I know some extremely bright and well-educated people who have dyslexia or are just poor or careless spellers. But as soon as I get an email or see a post that includes a lot of mis-spelt words, the writer is devalued in my eyes.

hooleymama · 17/10/2006 13:04

  1. People who get all the housework done BEFORE their children wake up in the morning.

Which leads me to...

People who use the word 'meeting' at work when they are just having a chat. A meeting IMO needs more than 2 people (otherwise it can be done casually over the phone, at a desk or by e-mail). If someone's phone rings whilst they are talking and they answer it by saying 'sorry, can I call you back? I'm in a meeting', they are simply lying. If you were in a real meeting you wouldn't have a phone to answer and it would have to be an important enough subject for you to take time out to go to it.

I think that I mean general self-importance at work - office based really which is the only environment I know.

LittleWonder · 17/10/2006 14:06

"Bare with me" when they put you on hold

Being put on hold for the nth time

Having to tell the whole story and then being told you are being through to a different department

And then getting cut off

I fear this is not irrational.......

phantomrantum · 17/10/2006 14:32

And along those lines, cold-callers.

SPACEdoutzombieCADET · 17/10/2006 14:33

phantom-and also little girls, in full make up, with crop tops on and short skirts which sit on their non existent hips showing off their belly button..its wrong.

SPACEdoutzombieCADET · 17/10/2006 14:38

people that come to your door, flas an id card in your face and say"hello madam, im just in your area providing quotes to your neighbours for double galzing/landscape gardening/guttering etc and noticed that you needed(any of the above) would you like a free no obligation quote(trying to edge over your doorstep at the same time)"
no i f'ing well wouldnt because if i wanted to replace any of the above, i wouldnt sit in my house waiting for someone to knock on my door and give me a quote!..grr

LittleWonder · 17/10/2006 15:22

moondog · 17/10/2006 18:51

It grates when people talk about SCBU in annoying acronym fashion.
Similarly TOIL

GRUMPYGHOUL · 17/10/2006 21:16

Phantom

2nd vote for office speak -"generic" "proactive" "ballpark"

Also when you are annoyed and speaking to someone who has been on the communication course on how to placate customers!!

moondog · 17/10/2006 22:34

Ghoul,my dh overuses people's first names in conversation.
I always tell him he sounds like he has been on some crappy communication course.

'YeaH, Dave I really understand how difficult it is to think out of the box,but at the end of the day Dave....'

I instantly lose respect for anyone who goes/has been to see a naff musical like Mama Mia, The Lion KIng,or 'Les Mizz'
