I want a website how do I do it?

Well to be more precise, DP wants a website for his business. Would be fairly small probably a max of 5-6 pages.

It would be for information only, with text & a few links to external sites & just a couple of images to brighten things up.

I think I should be able to do something basic. I am reasonably useful with the computer, but have no experience of this. How do I do it?

Please tell me everything I need to know - have tried googling but I expect someone will be able to tell me what I need to know without the waffle in half the time.

I have a vague idea about domain names & hosting. We get free web-space on AOL. Could we use this? Had a quick look and appears to be v v basic and probably doesn't have the flexibility of a proper web-site.

Does the software that the various hosting companies provide give a professional look? Is it easy to use? Am I being naive thinking that I could do it myself?

In the longer term we would want to get t done professionally but at the moment budget is very tight. Out of interest how much would I expect to pay for such a small website? I am guessing at about £300 from some very quick searches.

If you just want links (to email etc) it's relatively easy to do if you find a good tutorial and follow the instructions.

Any recommendations on a good tutorial?

I did it at work and can't remember what I used... DH is trying to do his website too but can't get motivated enough for it (and he used to work in IT!). I keep saying I'll do it for him but can't find the time.

2pumpkin contact morningpaper, either through cat or "employ a mumsnetter" section. She is fantastic. For something simple and just 5-6 pages, it isn't expensive. She can arrange all your domain stuff and hosting. Very experinced and clever lady.

yes morningpapers websites are great..I tried to persuade her she could do a shopping site but without success

Have put a message out for MP (in 'employ a mumsnetter). Bumping this in case she sees it here.
