Following on from the other living overseas thread. I thought I'd start one about regional differences. No flaming!!

Moved from Hampshire to Cardiff. I don't get...

"half an half" on Indian Menus, even the good ones, who has chips with curry?

The Word DAP. It means:-
about my dap - about my build
pair of daps - pair of trainers
set of daps - set of tyres for the car

Saying "Cheer Drive" to the taxi driver, bus driver. I wouldn't like to be called by my profession.

"Alright But!" as a greeting.

Rightyho then, add your regions and your funnies here....

Cob is a bad mood here too, and a crusty roll.

An oatcake is different here to anywhere else, lovely with bacon, cheese and brown sauce.

Way'up duck!,is the usual greeting.

Will have to start a thread!

MamaGhoul · 11/10/2006 20:39

I'm miles away from Barrow - about half way between Kendal and Penrith.

Am going to Barrow next week for work - real PITA getting there

nikkie · 11/10/2006 20:40

cumbrians come here

rustycreakingdoorbear · 11/10/2006 20:55

What about the whole 'twenty-one/one and twenty' thing? According to Bill Bryson, it changes as you move up (or down) the country in alternating bands of about 40 miles. I was born in Hertfordshire & I say twenty-one.

pointyfangedWeredog · 11/10/2006 20:57

Yes, molesworth! I like that saying, 'another think coming'

rustycreakingdoorbear · 11/10/2006 21:02

I think it's think too. Never occurred to me it could be anything else.

ProfYaffle · 11/10/2006 21:32

You can also sweat cobs can't you? Ick.

swedishmum · 11/10/2006 21:56

Hate in Kent "was you" instead of "were you". Also brought instead of bought. I miss the way that villages in Lancashire had their own cakes - Goosnargh cakes were a local at one point. Barm cakes brings it all back. What I really can't stand about this backwater of SE England is that it's so far from anywhere - have to drive for 45 mins to go to buy shoes, and good restaurants are like gold dust. Also detest "mate"

UnquietDad · 11/10/2006 22:06

Get it right swedish mum, it's "was ya?" And don't forget that "haven't you?" is "ent ya?"

And "I do not have the relevant information to hand" is "dunno nuffink abaht it."

Philomena · 11/10/2006 22:31

In Swansea a "cwtch" isn't just a cuddle. It is also the cupboard under the stairs.

When I left Swansea for England people looked at me strangely when I told them I'd scrammed myself. For those of you who are uneducated in Wenglish - a scram is a scratch that leaves a mark on the skin.

theshrimp · 11/10/2006 23:45

in East kent a "Dap" is an idiot.
In north kent an idiot is a "gommo"

Plumpbump · 12/10/2006 08:41

I have friends in the West Midlands who refer to the "Pork Batch" and "Entries", which are alleys.

Lived in Bristol for a while and blushed when strangers would refer to me as "My Loveeeerrr" - I used to think "But we've only just met!"

ScreamandYellowFeathers · 12/10/2006 08:49

Dh is from Barnsley in good ole South Yorks. He's recently started to say "t'other" which drives me mad.
ITS THE OTHER!

Also when we lived there my mum went to the local bakers, asked for a teacake and was well peeved when she got back to find a bread roll.
SIL used to cringe if she heard the word bap.

divastrop · 12/10/2006 20:27

'wheres it at?' instead of 'where is it?'.i say that myself now,in fact,if i go down south now people ask me where im from

Mirage · 12/10/2006 20:40

Pastarito, whereabouts in Leicestershire are you?I'm near the Pork pie capital of the world!

dizzybint · 12/10/2006 20:47

swedishmum- it isn't just kent that you get 'was you' instead of 'were you' it's everywhere. dh thinks it's posh to say 'were you' so i respond with 'you am, am you?' etc. he doesn't get it.
