UK regional variations - What ^don't^ you get about the area you moved to?

hockeymum · 11/10/2006 10:37

Following on from the other living overseas thread. I thought I'd start one about regional differences. No flaming!!

Moved from Hampshire to Cardiff. I don't get...

"half an half" on Indian Menus, even the good ones, who has chips with curry?

The Word DAP. It means:-
about my dap - about my build
pair of daps - pair of trainers
set of daps - set of tyres for the car

Saying "Cheer Drive" to the taxi driver, bus driver. I wouldn't like to be called by my profession.

"Alright But!" as a greeting.

Rightyho then, add your regions and your funnies here....

Have to agree to disagree on that one UQD. Googling on it shows this is an unresolved debate!

UnquietDad · 11/10/2006 12:55

Have to leave it as it's hijacked the thread somewhat. I'll say "thing" till my dying day!

PretendFriend · 11/10/2006 12:55

DH is working in Nottingham today - he says if one more person calls him me dook he'll hit them

LieselVonTrappDoor · 11/10/2006 12:58

I live in the same place I was born and laugh at the newbie Tesco customers asking for a "beg" to put their shopping in. I was born here and I have never asked for a "beg".

UnquietDad · 11/10/2006 12:59

?? wot's a beg?

LieselVonTrappDoor · 11/10/2006 12:59

I live in quite posh area BTW. Although people arent posh, just the folk who move into the area and decide to talk posh.

UnquietDad · 11/10/2006 13:00

Oh I SEE... a beg to kerry the kebbage and the waite waine.

PretendFriend · 11/10/2006 13:01

But why would anybody think they had to talk posh in Tesco???

Waitrose, now...

UnquietDad · 11/10/2006 13:03

Quite - you wouldn't get Lily Allen rhyming Waitrose with anything!

niceglasses · 11/10/2006 13:03

Back in NEast now, but whilst in Manchester never got used to:

'10 while 5'

As in ' the shops are open 10 until 5'

Cute tho, liked it in the end.

suejoneziscalmernow · 11/10/2006 13:04

I miss daps since I moved to England. Lucky I work with a Welshman and we can discuss daps all day long...

joelallie · 11/10/2006 13:16

It's definitely 'think'.

Molesworth · 11/10/2006 13:20

from the OED

" b. to have another think coming: to be greatly mistaken.

1937 Amer. Speech XII. 317/1 Several different statements used for the same idea{em}that of some one's making a mistake...[e.g.] you have another think coming. 1942 T. BAILEY Pink Camellia xxvii. 199 If you think you can get me out of Gaywood, you have another think coming. 1979 Jrnl. R. Soc. Arts CXXVII. 221/2 Any design consultant who thinks he is going to get British Leyland right by himself on his own has got another think coming."

Molesworth · 11/10/2006 13:20

sorry for hijack

LunarSea · 11/10/2006 13:31

anniediv - on the subject of bread rolls, I didn't get "batches" either when I first moved up to the midlands - it was just "rolls" (or sometimes "baps") where I came from.

Ot the way people would say they worked "at the xxx" for example, rather than at or for xxx, or at the xxx factory.

evilanniedividedin2byalargeaxe · 11/10/2006 13:33

See, I think of baps as 'boobs'. No wonder non English speakers have probs living here, it's bad enough for us!!

AnguaVonUberwald · 11/10/2006 13:48

I come from Northyorkshire and always used the short "a"s. I have now lived down south ofor 7 years and say Barth instead of Bath. The problem is that I seem to have applied it to all "a"s. So the other day at work I said: "Their is an aunt crawling across my desk". DP thinks its hilarious!

mrsdarcy · 11/10/2006 13:48

They have "floury baps" up here which makes me think of lecherous bakers!

Definitely "think" not "thing"

PretendFriend · 11/10/2006 13:55

Another think coming here too (southern + midlands)

Twohootsandapumpkin · 11/10/2006 13:56

Live in Lincoln originally from the North East. In Lincoln they also use the 'while' expression as in 9 while 5 - what? Oh and call everyone 'duck' all the time which is odd.

In the NE they have something called peas(e) pudding - think it's only a northern thing? Oh and stotties for large bread rolls/cake things.

magicfarawaytree · 11/10/2006 13:59

barm cakes? ginnels? our... sally , ma etc urrp in stead of up.

alexsCURSEDMUMMY · 11/10/2006 14:01

magicfarawaytree · 11/10/2006 14:04

yeah trolley! - what is that about? it tool me ages to get that one.

Tortington · 11/10/2006 14:07

alexsCURSEDMUMMY · 11/10/2006 14:15

when i was at college in west yorks the tea ladys at the kiosk used to ask if we wanted out cheese sandwiches on a tea cake. a tea cake to me is a sweet curranty thing but no it turned out that they meant a bap!
