hockeymum · 11/10/2006 10:37

Following on from the other living overseas thread. I thought I'd start one about regional differences. No flaming!!

Moved from Hampshire to Cardiff. I don't get...

"half an half" on Indian Menus, even the good ones, who has chips with curry?

The Word DAP. It means:-
about my dap - about my build
pair of daps - pair of trainers
set of daps - set of tyres for the car

Saying "Cheer Drive" to the taxi driver, bus driver. I wouldn't like to be called by my profession.

"Alright But!" as a greeting.

Rightyho then, add your regions and your funnies here....

Anyone for a barm cake? This was the term for a type of bread roll in Wilmslow (pronounced by the natives as WIMSLOW. North of Manchester that roll became a muffin. As a southerner who has lived in the North West, East Midlands and Devon I have learnt that it is easier to point at stuff in bakers.

Emskilou · 11/10/2006 14:19

Not read the whole thread but I was born in Essex grew up in Devon now I'm back in Essex and still dont get jellied eels, bleurgh [vomiting emoticon] or the other minging bits at the cocklesheds

Gobbledispook · 11/10/2006 14:20

I live near Wilmslow and I don't know anyone that says 'Wimslow'!!

Also quite surprised that 'barm' is used in Wilmslow!!! Not IME!!

Not saying you are lying obviously but it just doesn't sound like the Wilmslow I know!

evilanniedividedin2byalargeaxe · 11/10/2006 14:21

emskilou, do you mean the cockle sheds at Leigh on Sea?? Yum!!

Emskilou · 11/10/2006 14:23

Yes in the old town I love it down there but bleurgh!! whelks bluergh!! I eat the prawns and crab sticks!!

MamaGhoul · 11/10/2006 14:25

from yorkshire to cumbria

nobody locks their doors

apart from me

They say "larl" instead of little.

magicfarawaytree · 11/10/2006 14:25

first time I say barm cake I thought it was going to be a sweet cake! imagine my face when they bought this roll out?

CheesyFeetcomingtoGETyou · 11/10/2006 14:41
LunarSea · 11/10/2006 14:43

do you detect a pattern here? Just how many regional variations are there on plain old "bread roll"? There's "farl" and "hoagies" too isn't there, and don't they have "stottie" up in the North East?

Miriam2 · 11/10/2006 14:52

re : fish n chips- when I moved down sarf from oop north they asked me what SORT of fish I wanted. I had no idea. Where I came from you just got haddock (and lovely it was too) I'd never heard of rock salmon etc. And I was 25!!!!

Miriam2 · 11/10/2006 14:54

But what struck me most (and still bothers me) is that in London if you make conversation with someone (on train,in shop etc) they look at you as if you're mad or havesome ulterior motive...just human interaction, folks, don't panic!

Gobbledispook · 11/10/2006 14:56

I hated that you couldn't get gravy with chips in London.

divastrop · 11/10/2006 15:16

i moved from essex to south cumbria...where do i start??
everything here has extra words added on ie 'back' kitchen(even if its at the front of the house) and a childs slide is a 'banana slide' why???
bread rolls are 'buns'
and i had never heard of meat and potato pie till i came up here!i asked what meat was in it and everyone looked at me like i was mad.

a cup of tea or coffee is a brew.

and if something has been left on any item of furniture or the kitchen work surface and u ask where it is its always'on the side'

on the subject of chippys-i would kill for a saveloy!!they are unheard of here

CarolinahowlingattheMoon · 11/10/2006 15:23

mmmm, ham and pease pud stotties TwoHoots - yum!

on the bakery theme, the mince pie/sweet mince pie thing in the North East is pretty strange.

Also referring to family members as 'our John', 'your Sarah' etc, or even 'me sister' when you know the sister in question by name.

Mirage · 11/10/2006 16:12

dh is from Chorley & calls a bap a barm cake.In Leicester it would be called a cob.He calls the alleyway between two terrace houses a ginnel. His mum always finishes sentaces with the word 'so',as in 'I went to the shops,so'.??????

My gran came from Leicester & called brussels sprouts 'nobs'.

In rural Leicestershire,an old boy is anyone male over 18 & Ow do? is a greeting.

mrsdarcy · 11/10/2006 16:26

When our tiler (from Wigan) saw our lovely new kitchen he said "ey oop...ey oop"

kiwibella · 11/10/2006 16:47

gee, coming from NZ to East London there have been so many "differences", innit, yeah??

evilanniedividedin2byalargeaxe · 11/10/2006 16:51

Ha ha kiwibella, that's reminded me, I am terrible at adding "ja-nar-a-mean" to the end of everything!! Honestly my girls speak perfectly well!!

divastrop · 11/10/2006 17:20

i have offended many women up here by using the term 'bird' .the correct term is 'lass' or when referring to a mans dp/dw ,'missus',so im told.

PretendFriend · 11/10/2006 17:34

In Lancashire they say "yawrigh?" to people instead of hello/how are you. (I have caught it )

MamaGhoul · 11/10/2006 19:07

where do you live divastrop? I'm in cumbria too

gothicmama · 11/10/2006 19:12

why everyone takes joy in others misfortune

Pastarito · 11/10/2006 19:41

Oh, so that's what 'cob' means. I recently moved to Leicestershire from London and was wondering what on earth some of the things on my ds' school meals menus were.

divastrop · 11/10/2006 19:45

i live in barrow-in-furness,mamaghoul,how bout u?

i thought a cob was a bad mood,as in 'shes got a cob on'?!

ilovecaboose · 11/10/2006 19:58

'daps' is used in Bristol too - really confused our manager (in Woolies) when he first come down.

Also use 'where's that too', 'cheers drive' and some others a bit like S. Wales (prob cos we're so close).

Also 'gert', I love that word especially when its used as 'gert lush' . There is something so satisfying in saying it.

Plus a lot here I know used 'slider' instead of 'slide' (kiddies playground thing)
