Help me find trousers for classic pear shape !

Having had two kids in three years I am a couple of stone heavier than I used to be. Not too worried about that as I know that I will lose the weight or at least most of it in the next couple of years.

But, I now can't find trousers that fit. I am a classic pear shape with big hips and quite a narrow waist. Before kids I always found it difficult to find trousers that fitted, if they fitted round the hips/bum then they would be too big at the waist. I'm also 5ft 9"" with long legs just to add further complications.

Tried the highstreet, tried the department stores and no luck - used to buy Claudia Strater but too small now .

Down to a couple of pairs of trousers for work that I amazingly found in House of Fraser after last pregnancy and at the weekends wear tracksuits. Bit depressed as I desperately want to buy some new clothes.

I suppose the answer is to lose that weight but can't believe that I'm now off the scale. Long shot but anyone any ideas.

I'll even pay to get some trousers made in which case any recommendations for dressmakers.

I am soooooo glad someone has posted a message about being pear shaped and clothes....I have found it almost impossible to find anything that isn't jogging trousers (how unflattering and unsexy and hot in this weather!!!!)

I found some Jeans in M&S (but the dye came out on my cream sofa ARGGGGHHHH!) Found some more jeans in Debenhams.....perfect fit if you don't mind elasticated waists (have the same problem with hips being wide and waist not so wide )

I'm gonna try SimplyBe too. Anything's better than these blasted preggers trousers that are too big and keep falling down.

Thanks Kaz33 for starting this thread off.

I am classic pear size 14 bottom 10/12 top - Gap, Oasis, Whistles and Reiss fit me well.

French Connection, Zara, Kookai, all absolutely hopeless. Joseph - ha ha ha ha

Monsoon. Almost all my trousers come from there as they fit my pear shape perfectly.

Next I avoid like the plague. I once liked a pair of trousers so much that I kept trying on bigger and bigger sizes until I found a pair that would go over my hips. They did not make one point of countact with my waist, even if I stuck my tummy out.

M&S are OK, but it depends on the style.

Bizarrely my favourite two pairs of trousers are currently from Tescos!

For jeans, try Wrangler "Lucy" - they are the only jeans I've ever had that fit properly.

For other trousers I always buy a size up and then put some darts in at the waist - I'm not brilliant at sewing but it looks OK!

I am quite large at the moment (understatement) and I get nice, pear-shaped trousers from a mail order company called Artigiano, here . They have two catalogues, one covers sizes 10-20 and the other covers sizes 18-30. The clothes are more expensive than high-street chains, but very good quality. The two-way stretch trousers are particularly good for us pear-shaped women.

Thanks Ladies, no idea what size I am now but certainly bigger than conventional retailers 16. I am going to measure myself and try the two websites suggested and some of the shops and see if I get any joy.

Any other ideas welcomed

Well I have ordered some trousers from Artiango.

I went to M&S yesterday and tried on some 18 sized trousers, huge gaping gap round waist. Just checked Artiango and they give you a 10 inch difference between waist and hips, whilst M&S give you an 8 inch gap - am hopeful and !

But they are Italian so bound to be too short

Just to reassure you - Artigiano trousers are usually way too long for me and I have to get them shortened. Hope you like them!

Kaz33 · 20/04/2004 16:57

How tall are you Oldiemum ?

OldieMum · 20/04/2004 17:09

5'4" (28.5" inside leg). Lots of their trousers are 31". Some are as long as 35".

Kaz33 · 26/04/2004 21:17

Ladies and especially Oldiemum and Fisil thanks so much. Now proud owner of linen trousers from Monsoon ( size 18 hmmmmm ) and two pairs of work trousers from Artigiano ( and the best news I'm there 16 )

As ever trust Mumsnet to deliver...

saw article in heat mag today about uniquelywoman.co.uk set up by two pear-shaped women who were fed up of ill-fitting clothes.
dunno if coddy has given it her seal of approval...

mummysurfer · 31/05/2004 11:14
