Christmas/Birthday gifts

Any advice on alternatives for Christmas trees when you have small kids? I'd like to put something up this year, but a Christmas tree would be a total liability for my one-year-old.

We brought one of those small fibre optic Christmas trees that we were able to put up out of reach of small fingers. Our son loved seeing the lights change different colours.
