Oh, b*gger, the annual sense of swimming uphill through custard descends on the Inferiority Complex

It's probably seasonal. And/or hormonal. I certainly have bog-all to complain about: my children are NT, charming and stunningly beautiful (and DD1 leaves me notes saying 'Mum I love yoy xxxx'); my partner is really very nice, I suppose, and is finally solvent - indeed earns more than me now; my own work-life balance is broadly OK; my career, although not brilliant, is quite reasonable not least because I can now stop doing as many paid-by-the-day editing jobs I did, and work on a trade mag a couple of days a week. I have friends who'll babysit and/or can now afford paid options.

But it's still...custardly. And endless stream of the yellow stuff. I am simultaneously possessed by the urge to bog off from all of them for a weekend, and utter horror at the thought of leaving my delightful Inferiorettes. My career, although quite reasonable, is not brilliant. Sorting out babysitting is still sorting it out - it's very different from the kind of family support some people have - and in practice we just don't go out much. I'm fed up. In a somewhat wallowy way, of course. I want a sodding break.

Am dripping in custard this week.

So far (since yesterday) have had to:-

complete Ofsted form for school
pay dinner money
pay nursery fee
hunt down and take in, 2 shoes boxes for DD1's 'creation' at school
sort out some foodstuff for harvest festival
find out that I have to travel on Thurs and DP is away, so I will be panicking the whole time I am away because I need to get back to pick kids up
sort 'homework' for DD1
fill in the bloody reading diary that no bugger at the school ever seems to contribute to
organise workmen for some work on the house.

oh yes and I have been doing paid work 2 full days too.

But yes, like MI, I know I'm lucky, but sometimes it just gets too dreary for words.

That's what I hate about it sometimes - the sheer drudgery of everyday life. Yes we're all incredibly lucky but sometimes it would be nice to be rich and swan off to a 5 star spa for the weekend (or something).

mazzystar · 03/10/2006 10:24

for me there is a thing about always knowing that i will never have the utter freedom to do well you know whatever at whim again. or not for eighteen years. even though have happy lovely life.

i met a friend yesterday who was back to UK for 4 days. he's lvign in New York for a year or two and then thinking about going to San Francisco, maybe or San Diego if it takes his fancy. i was . i can't even go for a haircut without advance planning.

I think we need a charabanc for us ALL to bog off. It certainly is the time of year

expatinscotland · 03/10/2006 10:26

I feel sometimes that most of us could benefit from a piercingly loud, collective scream.

expatinscotland · 03/10/2006 10:27

If there's one lesson I hope my daughters learn from me is that most of life is pretty boring.

My wheels have been stuck in the mud for years now, and the car spinning out in 5th gear.

One of these days, they're going to pop out of the mud and either flip the car over or it'll launch into the stratosphere.

Clary · 03/10/2006 10:35

Marina excellent idea about MN charabanc.

marthamoo · 03/10/2006 10:43

I put four "you knows" in that. Blimey, I'm tired. Where's the charabanc?

HallgerdaLongcloak · 03/10/2006 10:44

If life gives you custard, make sherry trifle

marthamoo · 03/10/2006 10:45

All aboard!

Marina · 03/10/2006 10:45

Stuck in school-run traffic on the South Circular somewhere near Dulwich I expect Moo .
I think the Expat Scream is a very acceptable alternative

expatinscotland · 03/10/2006 10:49

F*ck the triffle, just glug the sherry.

Dannie · 03/10/2006 10:58

Yep, mine all have colds, I put the beach stuff away at the weekend and now it's all downhill until ANOTHER BLOODY CHRISTMAS WITH THE IN-LAWS!!!!!

joelallie · 03/10/2006 11:06

I'm 41 now and, I like to think, a rational person who takes ownership of her life and responsibilities. I don't beleive in God, the Easter bunny or Father Christmas. But a little bit of me STILL beleives that something amazing will happen to me one day to take away all the hassle, the worry and the problems. It just has to!!!

Marina · 03/10/2006 11:08

Packing away the sandy towelling shorts and binning the beach shoes is seriously depressing isn't it Dannie. Courtelle school jumpers are just not the same!

Dannie · 03/10/2006 11:40

OTOH, they were in the sea the weekend before last, which is pretty good going! The bit I dread is when the clocks change and it's too dark after school to play outside

PretendFriend · 03/10/2006 11:48

Courtelle????? Does that still exist?

SenoraPostrophe · 03/10/2006 11:54

aaah MI. It's hard when you haven't got anything to moan about. You are left with nothing to focus on. why don't you jack your job in to spice things up a bit?

or you could just escape for a weekend. don't feel guilty - the inferiorettes will be all the more delightful on your return.

I can highly recommend CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) to anyone feeling particularly 'custardy'. I had some a few years ago during a rather tricky time in my life and it was truly a life-changing event. It teaches you practical ways of coping with anxiety/low grade depression and also MAKES you look at things from a new persepctive rather than relying on old learned negative habits. It really is excellent although I nkow quite hard to get, if you can find a private practioner it is sooooooooo worth it.

MrsScareyFish · 03/10/2006 12:34

so ti doesnt analyse your GCse results then?
