'lads' mags' should be on the top shelf!

i am getting fed up with going into newagents and supermarkets and seeing what i would consider pornographic material on display where myself and my children can see it.magazines like FHM and NUTs etc.
i wouldnt be so bothered if there were female equivalents-ie magazines for women with graphic pictures of semi-naked,well-endowed men on the front covers, but the magazine industry is clearly sexist and seems to think that all women want to read about is other womens' horrific experiences of abuse etc,or whether jade goody is too fat.
anyway,i think that magazines containing explicit material should be on the top shelf and only sold to over 16's.

Agree completely. We should really lobby WHSmith's/John Menzies, garages and supermarkets about this.

divastrop · 30/09/2006 17:17

anybody who feels the same about this issue have a look here

I agree entirely. Some (most) of these covers are downright offensive. It's equally offensive that these magazines have such massive circulations!

divastrop · 30/09/2006 17:32

i think there is a bill going through parliament on october 20th to decide whether these magazines should be regulated (or something).the link i posted was for an organisation called object who are trying to get the mags classified as pornographic material.they have campaigns going on and are going to do a demo outside parliment on oct 20th.i would go but i live 350 miles away
im not a prude,i dont think theres anything wrong with porn,i just hate the way women are portayed as sex objects in mainstream mags that can be read by boys of any age

Have signed their petition.

ilovecaboose · 30/09/2006 18:30

DIdn't WHSmiths ban some magazines over the pictures shown on front cover? I remember some story about it a couple of years ago. Anyone know?

NotABraBurningOtter · 30/09/2006 18:35

i have complained ( and started threads about it) in the past so 'good on ya' divastrop

ediemay · 30/09/2006 18:46

Thanks for starting this divastrop. I completely agree with you and I avoid taking my DS into our local shop to buy comics because of it. Thanks for the link to Object abd the info on the forthcoming debate - I will email my MP and my AM.

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 30/09/2006 18:50

In our local "Spar" shop they have put these magazines in white plastic covers so although you can just make out which ones they are, you can barely see anything else.... a good idea me thinks.

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 30/09/2006 18:50

forgot to add, they are all on the top shelf as well

NotABraBurningOtter · 30/09/2006 18:56

why dont we start our own petition any know how to????

hockeymum · 30/09/2006 19:05

the thing that annoys me particularly is that the mags actually pay premiums to the big retailers for them being at eye height. I remember last year at Morrisons, just when the mags were getting more and more lewd, we had a directive that we had to display them on extra stands right by the sweets and near the door so they were highly visible. We had SO many complaints that week, so they got moved in the end. The only thing we can do is keep signing petitions and keep chipping away at them.

divastrop · 30/09/2006 19:56

im glad people agree with me!i get really annoyed every time i go to tesco cos they are meant to have a 'top shelf' policy for those mags, but my local tesco still has them on display at eye level and you have to walk past the magazines to get to the nappies and baby food.i have written and complained to the store but i was ignored,so i emailed head office and never got a reply.i am going to speak to the store manager face to face at some point when i feel less hormonal and wont burst into tears
notabraburningotter-i think it was a thread on this subject that led me to mumsnet in the first place.i only signed up so i could post on it then i realised it was over a year old....then i started reading all the other threads and forgot all about it till today!

i agree, they're awful! in our newsagents the dodgy mags are quite high up and the nipples are covered in little black stickers, it's mad.

lads mags should just have a pic of a big car on them instead

WideWebWitch · 30/09/2006 20:05

Totally agree. I'd be bothered even if there were female equivalents tbh.

morethannews · 02/10/2006 18:38

hi iam a mum of two and i am also own a news paper shop but our mags are on the top shelf but would never not sell them as they are legal and do not affend me or my mother shes 65 but if my supplyer suppled me with covers for them then i would put them on also.perhaps if you feel strongly about it you should go to where you do your shopping and say to them that you will not buy your shopping etc from them until they are covered up and when they have had more than a couple of people saying this to them then they would cover them up or raise them to top shelf as i have done. the supermarkets only listen to their there tills talking not humans you do have the power as its your money they want . stick to your guns with the threat and if they then do something about return to shop with them . it would be even stronger threat if you got your family and friend to sign a letter and follow it up with your till reciept from else where so they can see just howmuch money they are loosing every week. send all the reciepts from elsewhere to head manager every week money speaks loader than words .good luck

MerlinsBeard · 02/10/2006 18:47

I'm not offended by them but they seem to be on at least 2nd shelf from top in most if not all my local shops. I don't shop in any shops that would sell actual porn. Nuts and FHM are as hard as it get here They ARE sold top or 2nd top shelf and tbh what my boys (3 and 18 months) see on the front of those mags is only what they see at home as i am dressing/undressing anyway.

divastrop · 03/10/2006 12:50

more thannews-thanks,thats a good idea but tesco is the only big supermarket near me so i have no choice really.im going to wait and see what happens on october 20th.
mumofmonsters,it is the sexism that offends me,the fact that there are no magazines with pictures of men letting it all hang out, making the average small-willied,pot-bellied male feel inadequate.and i wasnt really bothered what my son's attitude to women was going to be like when he was 3,but now hes nearly 9 and he doesnt see me getting dressed etc things are alot different.

OP posts:
MerlinsBeard · 03/10/2006 13:06

ok, i see where ur coming from now diva.

I am still not offended by the images tbh. Its not like ALL women are sex objects, just those who choose to pose like that and get paid for it. It sells, men with everything hanging out just doesn't. Boobs are no longer a sexual thing to magazine editors at least. Ther is torso of the week in i think Heat mag and plenty of men with it 'hanging out' in more as far as i recall.

You can also get pornographic magazines for women ie with naked men in them.

I know its just your opinion so please don't think i am having a go, i am just putting my opinion across, albeit badly!

divastrop · 03/10/2006 14:22

ah u see thats what got me pee'd off about this in the first place,i used to read more, when i was young and childless, and it was full of half naked men,but now even that mag has pictures of women on the front!whats going on?!
the only mags with nudey bloke pics in ive ever seen are the ones aimed at gay men.
seriously, though,i know most men will know that just cos these women who get their tits out for money like to be viewed as sex objects to be used for mens pleasure,it doesnt mean all women are like that, but u will get men who do think all women are like that because of the images they see,and thats when serious issues like rape and sexual assault come into it.
i am not offended by nudity, but i am opposed to these mags that make women out to be sex objects being accepted as mainstream, especially when theres nothing to balance it out.so to speak.

Definitely agree with this too, thanks for starting the discussion divastrop. Can't access the petition now for some reason but will keep trying.
Have had my work cut out trying to explain about Ann Summers and some recent film titles to nosy ds
