I have been thinking about getting a puppy/kitten and would like to go through a charity such as RSPCA but i'm not sure how to go about it. Do i have to make a donation there and then? Or do i just go to the centre and literally pick waht i want and pay there and then thanks for any info

Go to the centre and look around, they will arrangea homecheck and if your home passes muster then you can go ahead - they will advise so you get the best pet for your family.

Try having a look here:
www.dogpages.org.uk/forums

Most will require you to have a home check and make a donation.

Good Luck in your search.

We went along to the local centre and looked at the cats ready for rehoming. There were notices on all the cages saying whether they were suitable with children, etc. On the day we went it left us with just one cat! But fortunately when we looked through his window he ran to us and rubbed himself up against the window. Decision made. He's a fab cat too.

They chip and pinned him, did his "bits" and he had some jabs by which time our home visit was done and we went to get him. We paid when we went to pick him up and it was £45.

The home visit consisted of a woman phoning me saying "he'll be fine with you as I know the area you live in" and then a very brief visit to the house. She insisted on us installing a cat flap, but I said we wouldn't until we knew we were getting him, so she said to buy it and show her when she visited. She was meant to come back a few weeks after we got him to make sure everything was OK but we've never heard.
