Ovarian Cyst

Morning ladies. Just wondering if any of you have ever had ovarian cysts. I have just found out I have one and I'm terrified. The sonographer assured me there's nothing to worry about as they are pretty common and I go back in 6 weeks. My older sister had ovarian cancer 18 years ago and now has Breast Cancer. So the sonographer wants to keep an eye on me. I am sooo scared at the minute would the sonographer know if it was anything sinister? Thanks for reading. Xxx

I think they re common tbh. I had them. They ll give you 6 mthly scans and assuming allis fine, will sign you off as ok.

My dd has just had a ruptured ovarian cyst, and from the way that the emergency consultant talked I suspect they are very common. He just gave her some more powerful painkillers and said it would heal itself up on its own as it had already popped. I think they are only issues if they keep on growing and have to be removed (dd also has a friend who has just had one surgically removed, and she was back in her acting class in a couple of days).

I had an 8cm cyst removed in Jan as I was getting pain from it and didn't want it to rupture. It was painful as I had to have a full cut due to its size and I ended up being signed off for 7 weeks. But I've healed well and don't need anymore checks. Mine happened during pregnancy and was picked up on my 12 week scan and just monitored.

It was my choice to have it removed, they were happy to leave it in and monitor me.

I had quite a few cysts/endometriomas that led to kissing ovaries. A few of them also ruptured, which was excruciating (nooka I feel for your DD).

That being said, they're usually absolutely fine and nothing to be worried about. But if you find you are worrying excessively don't be afraid to go back to the GP and ask to talk about it some more. Be frank at the time of booking your app and let them know you're after some reassurance. You can always go for a second opinion too.

I had one removed by keyhole surgery because it was causing pain, I also had endometriosis as well. Some forms of contraception such as the progesterone only pill increase your risk of getting cysts. As I understand it, if it is a simple fluid filled cyst then they will often monitor it and wait to see if it shrinks back on its own unless it is causing problems.
