PA want to use a field for car parking next May. Its permanent pasture but the farmer may have to cut silage early if we use it. We thought it might encourage then to help if we offered some payment and wondered what sort of value silage has per acre?

Hi we live next door to farmer, will ask him today for you. Silage even cut early would not be cut until june/july around here, but we live in cold north East, so perhaps farmers can get early cut if they are in the warmer south!!
Knowing farmers as I do! they will allways want payment. One of the other problems you may have if it is a wet spring like it was this year, he may not want land churned up with cars.

I caught him by surprise and money was not mentioned, only free tickets to the show . However he's only thinking about it at the moment, was suggesting he might put cows there. I found a site for glider pilots about compensation that suggested grass was only £50 an acre

how many acres is field?
our 5 acre field produced 30 round bales, and silage is going for more than £16 a bale, so you can work out how much it is worth approx.. it obviously depends on how many cars you will have and how much acreage it will take up.

Thanks for the help. Don't know how big the field is but I'd expect us to have something like 150 cars in there. It's part flat and part sloping so I'm hoping the drainage would be reasonable and we wouldn't cut it up too much. We'd probably buy a bottle of whisky or something if he doesn't ask for money but I agree most farmers would.
