We are moving to Devon at Christmas, dp has job in Exeter and we think we want to move to north east edge of Dartmoor. Really like the look of Christow area and schools, but only visited once! (Coming down again in October). Finding it very hard to find house to rent, too. Does anyone know area, or have any general tips for us? My dd will be starting high school next September, anyone recommend schools? Is the Teign school good, friendly etc? We are looking for a friendly, safe village to settle in,ds1 will be in year2, ds2 is 2. Any advice would be really appreciated1

Keep bumping this rebeka - there are mumsnetters down there you just have to catch them on line!

fennel · 26/09/2006 12:21

hi

we moved to Devon earlier this year, we are living in a village just outside Exeter. there are other mumsnetters who've moved here recently too. One lives in the area you're talking about, but she's recently changed her posting name and I'm not sure if she's on mumsnet much at the moment.

Hi Rebeka, fennel has pointed me in your direction! I live very close to where your looking: large village with long name beginning with M! We've lived here for 7 years now and also have three children (ds1 7, dd 5 and ds2 3). The eldest two are at the primary school here. Where we live feeds to South Dartmoor for secondary which is Ashburton, but I know just up the valley go to Teign. I've heard really good things about Teign: good results, good atmosphere, nice children. In fact a good friend of mine works there teaching French and she's happy there.

If I can help in any way, just yell!

Thanks everyone, thanks pageturner! I'm really looking forward to moving but there is so much to sort out, and we are miles away (Norfolk!). Do you get out and about on Dartmoor with your children? We wanted to move to the area cos we love walking, and hills! Norfolk flat as pancake! Do you know a web address of local newspaper property site, i have been looking on thisisdevon, is that the only one? It's great to hear that you like living there!

Hi Rebekah. The best local paper for property is the Newton Abbot & Mid Devon Advertiser. I've just found their website today (here ) but I couldn't get the property search to work! It comes out on a Friday and most local agents advertise in it.

DH and I are mildy obsessed with the local housing market. These are some of the websites we like to look at : most have quite good propery searches too. Some of them might have more stuff my way, but might have something useful for you.

Ashbys.
Fowlers.
teamprop. This one is lots of estate agents advertising together, it includes Rendells who are quite big round here, Sawdye and Harris, and I think Palmer & Radclyffe.
Michemore Huges.
Howard Douglas.
Bradleys.

Hope some of these are useful!

If you like walking this is definitely a good place to come: we certainly have hills! We get out when we can, dh particularly likes long walks. Unfortunately our children are filled with dread at the words "lets go for a walk on Dartmoor" because they know that their father's definitions of "not long" and "short" aren't the same as everyone elses! There's plenty of choice of places to go though and you can tailor-make your walks to suit. I hope's what you're hoping for!

I live in Torquay. I used to live in Chudleigh when I was 16 so dont know much about schools etc but the Teign Valley is beautiful. My mum does a lot of walking on Dartmoor and takes my DS on 'ranger ralph' activities which he loves. We as a family go to the moors for picnics - glorious. Course you are near to some beautiful beaches, really recommend South Hams area, Blackpool Sands. I hope you love Devon as much as we do,

No problem, rebeka. Happy house hunting!

fennel · 02/10/2006 13:23

hi again Rebeka

Have realised I live quite close to Christow, just a couple of villages away (with Doddiscombeleigh and Dunchideock in between us). have only been in this village a few weeks so I didn't realise you'd be so close to where we are. we share the same bus route into Exeter. we are really enjoying living here, hope you find something you like.

Hi Rebeka

Bumping for you. Moved to south Devon last year, love it, love it, love it. Good luck and welcome to a wonderful part of the country.

Cassoulet · 03/10/2006 20:36

Hi Rebeka, we moved to Devon (just south of Exeter) last Christmas. Like somanybabyseagulls: love it love it love it. Good luck. Have a fab time.

PS Our completion date was Dec 20th and we managed to get my mum settled into her bit of the house, us more or less into ours, the biggest Christmas tree we've ever had, and Xmas dinner (with local produce) done for all of us and my brothers and two friends! Anything is possible, believe me!

fennel · 04/10/2006 10:46

Lots of us Devon newbies on mumsnet, it seems. are any of you going to come to any meet-ups? I think Essbee might be posting about one soon.
