What's the upkeep like on them? How often do you need to get them redone? Does it affect your house insurance much?

I don't, but know someone who does. They found it very difficult and expensive to get insurance. Their house is thatched with reed, and lasts 30-40 years, but needs checking every 2 or 3 years for repairs. It is also a listed building - so no alterations that would affect the character of the house etc.

this may help

I have a friend who lives in one. They get loads of spiders etc. in it and never go out on bonfire night as they are always on standby with the hosepipe in case of stray fireworks. Think it looks great but lot of hard work
