Can I run in a 10k run with one month's training?

Or am I mad to consider it?
I got roped into running in a 5k "fun" run last weekend with two weeks notice to train. I am not fit and completely unathletic but managed to run (slowly) all the way.It was very hard going but I felt a great sense of achievement at the end.It was the furthest I have run in my life
Now I am considering doing a 10k run at the end of April. I have no ambitions to get a fast time, just to complete the course running most if not all the way.
Do you think it is possible and if so does anyone know of a sensible training programme I could follow?
Thanks.

JulieF - no chance, you need to be a mountain goat to get up Porthill Bank after 18 miles

Twink · 09/07/2004 19:59

I'm the proudest mummy in the world today as my little poppet completed her first Race for Life today in 57 minutes - and nearly as proud of my mum who did her first too.

Twink · 10/07/2004 01:00

Hey Jasper, just looked through other threads & you seem to have vanished lately, are you ok ?

Tinker · 10/07/2004 02:56

Wow. well done Mini Twink and er, not so Mini Twink

jasper · 11/07/2004 00:19

Twink congratulations on your athletically gifted family!
I'm still here, still running 3-4 times a week but not today due to ridiculous quantities of wine yesterday.

The sore calf got worse and after a bit of research decided to try NOT stretching so much, and icing it after a run and it is getting better.

Was meant to do a 10k 2w ago but got tonsillitis.
Have no excuses now though except my appalling bad behaviour yesterday.

Glad to hear you're recovering. Injuries are sooo demoralising aren't they ?

Hmum & I did another RFL yesterday & had a blinding run, we kept each other going and we beat our best by stacks so we are well chuffed (21:50 !!) Which 4 days after a best ever 10k was even better; off on holiday now to undo all the good I've been doing

luckymum · 18/07/2004 16:42

Hey Twink - missed this as I was on holiday too last week, went to the New Forest and got a bit wet Well done with the races - 21.50! I could only dream of doing it that fast!

Jasper, glad the leg's a bit better and hope the tonsilitis is too!

jasper · 24/08/2004 21:52

Did anyone else run in the Glasgow 10k on Sunday?

Twink · 24/08/2004 22:13

I assume you did Jasper ? How did you get on ? I was doing my first sprint distance triathlon - highly recommend having a go if you get a chance !

luckymum · 25/08/2004 11:43

Twink...well done on the triathlon and well said too on the PR thread. Some people just don't have a clue Got the Flora light challenge in Birmingham on 5 Sept, pretty fed up with training though as we haven't had a dry day in a month and I'm forever getting soaked!

Twink · 25/08/2004 16:13

Thanks Luckymum. I don't usually go off like that but I was soooo cross.

Good luck for the 5th, I'm doing a multi-terrain 10k that day so will send some positive thoughts to Brum.

Know what you mean about the weather, got caught one day last week in rain so heavy I literally couldn't see where I was going !

jasper · 25/08/2004 16:40

Triathlon, Twink? Waaah! That's srious! Well done you.
The 10k was a great event. Really hard work but the finish was amazing. I felt like I had won an olympic gold. I had a lump in my throat running over the Kingston Bridge. I finished the course in just over an hour and 3 mins and was very pleased as had estimated an hour and ten.
Good luck to you and luckmum on your various endeavours on the 5th.

I am so impressed with you all!

Luckymum did you hear the Potteries Marathon is being changed next year into a half marathon. Perhaps it is within reach after all?

Good luck for the 5th

Twink · 26/08/2004 16:44

That's great Jasper, you've come on so well especially when you think you've only been at it 4 months !

Sub 1 hour next time ?

Prettybird · 27/08/2004 10:40

Jasper - if only I'd have known, I could have given you an extra special supporing cheer at the corner of Aytoun Road and Matilda Road, where dh, ds and I were supporting the runners! So I must have seen you - albeit I don't know which one of the thousands that went past you were!

I was Jan Z , but I've changed my name.

Prettybird · 27/08/2004 10:45

And congratulations. You've done really well to keep it going - and that is a prefectly respectable time!

We were still seeing people walking past (ie just before the 5k mark - or was it 6k?) when you were FINISHING!

Next year the Half marathon?!

Ixel · 27/08/2004 11:33

I've been avoiding these threads for ages, sticking my head in the sand! I did RFL, but really messed up... 35 mins. Am doing the Hyde Park 5km on 5 th Sept, but yet again have failed to train properly as now have small baby and prospective house sale/purchase to juggle!! But, I took mckenzie's advice and bought a proper baby jogger (good old ebay!). now I need the insriration to get out and do it! And really, reading this thread is starting to fire me up a bit. Thank you.

mckenzie · 27/08/2004 13:15

Ixel, where do you store the Jogger? Mine used to live in the garage which is at the botom of the garden and then it was a bit 'out of sight, out of mind' and I didn't use it so much but once I decided to keep it in the hallway (during the week only, DH banned it at weekends, fair enough) then I used it all the time!
Need to pop some books back to the library - ran with the jogger.
Need to pop to the corner shop for a pint of milk - ran with the jogger.
Want to give DS some fresh air - ran wiht the jogger.

And you can always add on some loops round the block if the journey that you need to make is too short.

Good luck Ixel. I'm so pleased you got one on Ebay and I hope you get as much out of yours as I do mine.

PS. In case you ever need to borrow it, I bought the rucksack that you put the Jogger in to carry it somewhere. I've never used it but you're very welcome to borrow it if you want to take the jogger on holiday or something.

luckymum · 27/08/2004 14:21

Jasper - well done with the 10 k

JulieF - mmmm the Potteries Half, my running mate wants to do it but I might check out the route first, I don't do hills well!

Ixel - good luck on the 5th I'll be thinking of you.

And lastly, three cheers for Paula - I hope it goes well for her in the 10k and for Kelly Holmes too, she's brill!

jasper · 27/08/2004 21:04

prettybird that would have been a hoot! My friend's parents gave us a cheer at Albert Drive (?) and dh and kids were at the finish. I honestly felt like I had won a gold medal when I crossed the line,.

I have sent you a message on one of the weight loss threads.

Hi mckenzie. The jogger has been living in our bedroom, so hard to avoid it. But now our flat is on the market, we've 'temporarily' put loads of stuff in our neighbour's spare room, to give the illusion of space, and the jogger had to go there. So its out of sight out of mind. But if we get the house we've lined up, I'm going to get a little lock up shed or container of some sort, in the front, for the jogger, the buggy, and the stroller! No more vehicles in the house!

Twink · 05/09/2004 09:01

Probably too late now, but good luck for the Flora Light today Luckymum !

Just off to do our local 'multiterrain' 10k now.

Twink · 05/09/2004 18:21

Blimey it was sooooo hot today, how did you get on ?

I managed to beat last year's time for the same race but then fainted at the finish - how to embarrass yourself or what !!

mckenzie · 05/09/2004 18:34

sorry to hear about the fainting Twink. Was it because of the heat or did you push yourself just that little bit too hard do you think? Well done for beating your time though!

I ran yesterday and finally think i might be turning the corner going from that early stages of pregnancy hardly putting one foot in front of the other to suddenly finding i've got my old stride back (I'm 15 weeks which is about when they say you get some energy back I think isn't it?)

Dingle · 05/09/2004 18:38

Hello out there!!!
I'm by no means a runner, but just completed the Flora Light Challenge, Hyde Park today. My first experience of it all- I'm on such a high- a great buzz. Only really walked it,but I am very keen to do more next time!!I'm thinking of how much I could improve with some real training.
Have raised over £1200 for DSA, enspired by my dd!
Still fairly new to MN, it is a mine of information about all sorts- I am addicted!!
