Can I run in a 10k run with one month's training?

Or am I mad to consider it?
I got roped into running in a 5k "fun" run last weekend with two weeks notice to train. I am not fit and completely unathletic but managed to run (slowly) all the way.It was very hard going but I felt a great sense of achievement at the end.It was the furthest I have run in my life
Now I am considering doing a 10k run at the end of April. I have no ambitions to get a fast time, just to complete the course running most if not all the way.
Do you think it is possible and if so does anyone know of a sensible training programme I could follow?
Thanks.

And from me too Jasper. You've been missed this week, hope you and yours are ok now.

Good luck, we'll be thinking of you.

Tinker · 28/04/2004 22:42

Just read this thread - it's about exercise so have skipped it normally But Jasper, Good Luck for for Sunday.

jasper · 30/04/2004 00:09

AH, thanks girls!
I have had no phone /internet since Tuesday , and it is nice to get back here and read your good wishes. YES I am going to do it tomorrow. Have just eaten a big bowl of pasta, could murder a few glasses of wine, but mustn't!
This time tomorrow it will all be over

Great, we've been worriting about you.

Don't get sucked into starting too fast, ignore what everyone else is doing and go at Jasper pace. You won't be last but it wouldn't matter if you were, the vast majority of the population could only dream of what you WILL achieve tomorrow.

tigermoth · 30/04/2004 01:57

jasper, you will do it - great advice to run at jasper pace. Keep that in mind. Good luck!!

jasper · 01/05/2004 00:58

I DID IT !!!
Ran at Jasper pace all the way - took 1 hour 4 minutes. Won't qualify for the olympics but am very happy.
Very tired too

Bloody brilliant, well done you !

Be really proud of yourself, it's less than a month since you asked your original question and you've answered it yourself

Next challenge ? (No, sorry, enjoy what you've achieved)

luckymum · 01/05/2004 01:08

Jasper - brilliant run woman, excellent pace - next stop a half marathon. You deserve a drink - cheers - I need one, have a dodgy knee today and wine does the trick better than ibuprofen.

hmum · 01/05/2004 01:27

congratulaions, you did really well, I bet theres no stopping you now.

Twink · 01/05/2004 01:29

As Luckymum says that's a really good pace, approx 10 mins per mile, make sure your kids know what a star they were supporting.

Race For Life will be a breeze so sign up now while you're still euphoric (no, I'm not on commission)

Tinker · 01/05/2004 01:48

WELL DONE JASPER!!!!

jasper · 01/05/2004 01:51

AAAAH you girls are |SO kind.
Twink not sure about the next challenge.I am on Holiday during race for life or I would def. be doing it. Are you? There is a 10k in East Kilbride on 20th June but not sure if I'm free.

hmum I do feel very inspired! It was very tough though. I kept thinking "why am I doing this?"

Luckymum I have already had a bottle of wine, half a pizza and a shedload of chocolate. All proven analgesics in my book!

How are you all getting on with your running?

jasper · 01/05/2004 01:52

Thank you Tinker. Just think how fast I can sprint round Lidl now

Fantastic Jasper! What a lovely day for it as well.

How about the Glasgow 1/2M in August? I'm thinking of training for it myself. If you're not up for the full 1/2 marathon, there is also a 10k.

The 10k goes practically past our house!

Janh · 01/05/2004 12:41

Well done, jasper! How are your feet?

jasper · 01/05/2004 15:57

Feet fine!calves a bit stiff. Slight hangover but otherwise OK.
JanZ do you have details of the August Glasgow 10K? DOn't think I could ever attampt a half marathon, that would just be too much torture

OP posts:
JanZ · 01/05/2004 17:44

Jasper - here are the details: The 2004 Great Scottish Run .

The times haven't been confirmed yet, but according to that link, the 10K started an hour before the 1/2M, at 9.30. And at least it gives contact details for entry forms.

You'd be surprised at who manages to get around the full 1/2M course. Even just on today's training, I think you could get round - even if you walked most of the way (as many do!) - as you have already run nearly half the distance. But I can understand that you would want to "do" it properly!

It's a tremendous sense of achievement - as I am sure you know from your experience yesterday - and although your first thought on finishing is "Never again!", it's funny how soon you forget the pain....! A wee bit like childbirth!

Hulababy · 01/05/2004 17:45

Well done Jasper

jasper · 02/05/2004 00:31

JanZ the similarities with childbirth had not escaped me!

Well done Jasper - just found this thread as I've taken up running again - first time for 3.5 years and weighing a stone and a half heavier...I staeted 2 weeks ago and am up to 2.5 miles - you've just inspired me.......thanks and well done

jasper · 04/05/2004 04:03

Good luck Sonnet. Do you have a fun run or similar to aim for? I ran 3 miles today - first since Sunday's run. It was SO hard.
Does it ever get any easier?

OP posts:
luckymum · 04/05/2004 19:24

Sonnet, well done for getting back out there. Why not sign up for your nearest Race for Life?

Jasper, I don't think it does get any easier - why is it that you can run one week and feel great and then run the same route the next week and feel, well crap to put it bluntly?

jasper · 05/05/2004 07:11

Don't know why that is luckymum. I am certainly disappointed that running does not get any easier. Seems the only thing that improves the more I run is the ability not to stop running, if you know what I mean

OP posts:
Twink · 05/05/2004 11:18

I think it does get easier eventually (over months not weeks) but agree with Luckymum, sometimes the same route you bounded around one week can feel as if you've got lead legs and non-working lungs the next.

The only way I realise how much better I've become at running is when I go out with people who are running at the speed I did last year, cos I can chat and don't get out of breath on hills whereas they are looking & sounding like I do normally iyswim.

I know it sounds Anoraky but it is worth keeping a running diary of times, routes, weather, how you felt, if you were alone etc because on bad days you can look back and see how much progress you've made.
