Pirate Costume Help - Boots?

Fancy dress party tonight - any suggestions on how to make pirate boots for DH?

We're thinking some sort of tube thing covered in material, over the top of normal shoes - would it work???

Any better ideas??

Black wellies with deep rim of cardboard over the top, maybe goldy colour??
