i wonder if you could help. i installed tiscali b/band last night (for 24 hour access to mumsnet for when i go on maternity in 2 weeks ), and now my pc is giving me error messages in dos before windows opens saying i've lost my vnetsup.vxd, vredir.vxd, and dfs.vxd device files. then as it goes into windows it tells me it can't load the dynamic link library msnp32.dll
HELP! have tried to uninstall and reinstall but it seems the damage has been done, and Tiscali support have been helpful but have referred me to windows/ms help which is going to be nightmare. anyone out there with ideas or that can help me? would be much appreciated.

what version of Windows are you on madgirl?

PipBeckett · 29/03/2004 12:12

I've just asked my hubby because I thought it was a graphics problem. Here's what he said. BTW - he's a MCSE

Chris Beckett@ISU says:
No, it's all TCP/IP stack stuff. You should be able to copy them manually from the install CD.
Philippa says:
Explain further for me.
Chris Beckett@ISU says:
When 98 starts, it loads up all the services it needs for TCP/IP. These messages are saying it can't start these because it can't find those files. You may be able to copy them over manually from the 98 CD.
Philippa says:
In to the system folder?
Chris Beckett@ISU says:
Can't remember off hand, probably.

He's very busy at work and couldn't chat any longer but give it a try and post back if it doesn't work and I'll ask him again.

thanks pip so much- one question to ask him when he's not as manic- is there anywhere i can find the files if i can't find the cd? oops- another question, if i can find it, will it allow me to copy me certain files as opposed to taking me automatically through the whole windows showtime installation etc?
spacemonkey- windows 98
thanks both - and what is a mcse?

mcse = Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer

my advice is upgrade to XP - some might argue, but i've had none of these sort of problems since I've had XP

spacemonkey · 29/03/2004 16:07

if you can't find the files, it may be possible to download them from somewhere on the internet?

madgirl · 29/03/2004 16:25

yes i know i have to upgrade. can i just do that by going to pc world? sorry to be thick

OP posts:
spacemonkey · 29/03/2004 16:30

yes you can just buy the upgrade at pc world or any computer shoppe

Mr Pip will probably have a solution for you though if you want to stay on Win 98

madgirl · 30/03/2004 08:32

well i've managed to get rid rid of the problems with the vxd files- by using sfc, only thing is now, i get a message in windows set-up- saying i'm missing msnp32.dll have tried to copy this from win98 cd but no joy. does mr pip have any other ideas?

I'm going to ask him right now on Instant Messenger Madgirl. Watch this space.

PipBeckett · 30/03/2004 09:11

Okay, he's sent me a zip of the file you need. Send me an E-mail username - hotmail.com and I'll forward it to you. He says it's the Network Provider for MS Network. So probably quite important. Hope this helps.
