What makes someone middle class?

lilibet · 31/08/2006 17:03

Just had a conversation with a mate and a mutual freind has described themselves as middle class.

He works in a shop for a living, his parents work for a living, to me he is therefore working class.

I appreciate that a brain surgeon is obvioulsy a bit higher up the social strata than me ( I work in finance in the NHS), but to me if you have to work for a living you are working class.

Thoughts and opinions?

Now I think a garlic press is just a waste of time - middle class or otherwise. Takes too long to clean the stupid thing out - I've just chopped it for years now. Now try telling me that a good sharp kitchen knife is a sign of class ......oh hang on...sabbatier anyone????

HappyDaddy · 01/09/2006 11:26

I know we're working class cos I tend to call it the bog or khazi.

joelallie · 01/09/2006 11:28

Ah...but 'bog' could be a posh person trying to acquire some kind of working-class chic!

I think the name you give to the room you sit and relax in is a give away ....lounge, sitting room, living room, parlour, drawing room????

may I point out that this is the best garlic device ever. You chuck whole cloves in and it come out on a little thing all grated, really really easy to clean and the whole thing goes in the dishwasher after a quick rinse.

lilibet · 01/09/2006 11:33

You'll have to send it to work - dh isn't at home to forward it to me

He's gone watching Nacho Libre!!

With the boys obviously

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 01/09/2006 11:35

Oh, looking at it I did send it to your work one - I replied to yesterdays (the one with your work place in the addy)

lilibet · 01/09/2006 11:35

Have you decided if he is middle class?

Or if you care one way or the other as long as he is a nice bloke?

Let's talk about kitchen gadgets instead

I LOVE my panini machine

lilibet · 01/09/2006 11:37

But do you use your kitchen gadgets? I'm of the use them for a week then stick them in the back of a cupboard variety

Oh, just doing your own cooking must be working class, md!

notasheep · 01/09/2006 11:39

We have a box fitted above door in kitchen with all the rooms listed -at some point the owners must of had servants

noddyholder · 01/09/2006 11:40

Agree with custy middle class are just that middle of the road and terrified to do anything that might not fit the image of 'nice'people living a 'nice'life. Most people do work but a road sweeper and a surgeon would probably not consider themselves the same class.I think it has more to do with education and how you conduct yourself and whether or not you care how others see you and yours
