What makes someone middle class?

Just had a conversation with a mate and a mutual freind has described themselves as middle class.

He works in a shop for a living, his parents work for a living, to me he is therefore working class.

I appreciate that a brain surgeon is obvioulsy a bit higher up the social strata than me ( I work in finance in the NHS), but to me if you have to work for a living you are working class.

Thoughts and opinions?

well, yeah, but WAGs are generally showy and ostentatious, you see, and there is more to it than that...it's about being posh (which some people just ARE and it's not their fault!!) AND rubbing other peoples noses in it (which IS their fault!).

WAGS can only wish they were bourgeois, they are so sad.

'borghese' in italian means middle class really.

Isn't it also a brand of makeup, UM?
