What makes someone middle class?

Just had a conversation with a mate and a mutual freind has described themselves as middle class.

He works in a shop for a living, his parents work for a living, to me he is therefore working class.

I appreciate that a brain surgeon is obvioulsy a bit higher up the social strata than me ( I work in finance in the NHS), but to me if you have to work for a living you are working class.

Thoughts and opinions?

I "second hand clothes and new shoes". That's me!
I don't think it's anything to so with work or money - I think it's mostly to do with attitude and language. For example, I am inescapably middle class. I shop at charity shops (apart from shoes, obviously!)and take great pleasure in doing so - but I can take pleasure in it because realistically I don't actually have to. Tesco's clothes are cheaper than out Charitity shops, but I would rather have second hand Boden than new Cherokee. I have supper or dinner in the evening, never tea, unless it's for the children and in inverted commas. I have lunch in the middle of the day, I go to the loo not the toilet, I have a living room not a lounge, I would rather my children said "what?" than "pardon?", I have a terrace not a patio, my house is always untidy, I awvays have a real Christmas tree, I have a sofa not a settee and I get very uncomfortable when people start talking about the cost of things. The list goes on, but I will spare you the rest!

I'm amazed that people still give a monkey's about this sort of stuff. It's so . . . Edwardian.

And dull.

HappyDaddy · 01/09/2006 09:15

People who give a toss which class they are, are usually Middle Class.

Anyone else is just normal.

southeastastra · 01/09/2006 09:17

I said that Happy Daddy and everyone said that no working class people did too!

HappyDaddy · 01/09/2006 09:36

Working class people who worry about being middle class should get a life.

Tortington · 01/09/2006 09:36

actually most working class people consider themselves middle class becuase they ownt heir own homes. the mistake being that its something to aspire to! as if.

HappyDaddy · 01/09/2006 09:37

I'm working class, my mum's working class, grand parents and so on. I don't bother about status or what others have that i don't. We work hard so we can buy nice things but they are for us and no-one else's benefit.

I am me and I have no desire to be anything else.

Tortington · 01/09/2006 09:38

Pamina rhubarb once argued that having a blender was middle class after i had bought one. i couldnt take the ridicule so bought her one

Agghh!! Class definition by kitchen appliances...... is there no escape????

UnquietDad · 01/09/2006 10:48

Yup. Gaggia, breadmaker, garlic-press, juicer... surely all middle-class items?

notasheep · 01/09/2006 10:50

And a drawing room

UnquietDad · 01/09/2006 10:57

We've got a painting room, will that do?

(It's also known as the decking.)

HappyDaddy · 01/09/2006 11:08

I've got a study, although DW calls it the loo. Does that count?
