What makes someone middle class?

lilibet · 31/08/2006 17:03

Just had a conversation with a mate and a mutual freind has described themselves as middle class.

He works in a shop for a living, his parents work for a living, to me he is therefore working class.

I appreciate that a brain surgeon is obvioulsy a bit higher up the social strata than me ( I work in finance in the NHS), but to me if you have to work for a living you are working class.

Thoughts and opinions?

Thanks Shimmy. I knew someone would agree with me eventually!

Hi expat BTW. Looking forward to sparring with you later this month!

UselessMum · 01/09/2006 22:44

true fatfox. the chavinest italian is as groomed as giorgio armani himself!

(that's why I had to leave... I felt like the bloody wickedwitchoftheeast most times. I swear to you I never got chatted up by any bloke back home and here... ah I'm transformed into Snowwhite herself )

expatinscotland · 01/09/2006 22:44

I wear frumpy clothes b/c I just can't be arsed.

So I must be bourgeois.

Glassofwine · 01/09/2006 22:45

expat - I think you must be.

enemy · 01/09/2006 22:46

MC may buy you Boden but it certainly does'nt buy style. I don't see anything remotely middleclass about it. Sort of reminds me of the clothes people wore years ago before they really knew how to dress.

Glassofwine · 01/09/2006 22:47

But that is what's so MC about it, cords, deck shoes for men, trousers just that bit too short with coloured socks and loafers for women. Dulwich is full of them.

expatinscotland · 01/09/2006 22:47

Dumbie, get over it! David Tennant is a foul minger and Dumbledore is dead, dead, dead!

UselessMum · 01/09/2006 22:48

I've never heard of boden before coming to MN. should I be ashamed? or glad? I doubt I'll anything anyway, I hate buying off catalogues. (I wonder what that makes me.)

fatfox · 01/09/2006 22:48

I get exited by Boden I'm afraid; but that's probably because I'm middle aged rather than middle class!

expatinscotland · 01/09/2006 22:48

Deck shoes and loafers? OMG! Are they 'frat boys'??!!!

This thread is great craic!

It's a larf.

UselessMum · 01/09/2006 22:50

oh and I hate wasting money, although I do most of the time.

oh and M&P is another rip off I think. kids stuff far over priced.

Glassofwine · 01/09/2006 22:50

Will confess to liking Boden childrens clothes, but like expats mate - I copy them and make them myself for peanuts. So Johnny's never recouped his catalogue costs with me.

fatfox · 01/09/2006 22:51

Richmond is full of Boden as well so Boden must be middle class !

As for Boden is SE London - Dulwich yes, Bermondsey no!!

expatinscotland · 01/09/2006 22:51

My dad's a self-made man. But he didn't get rich by wasting good cash on crap like Boden.

DumbledoresGirl · 01/09/2006 22:51

I heard something the other day Expat and thought immediately of you (something that would have wound you up)but, dammit, I have completely forgotten what it was!

UselessMum · 01/09/2006 22:51

This thread is good publicity for Boden really. Do you ladies get a percentage from them? I am so intrigued now I really want to see the catalogue.

curlew · 01/09/2006 22:52

That's the whole point of Boden - it's supposed to look like that. It's make people feel that they are giving their children a carefree, Swallows and Amazons (now there's a mc marker if ever there was one!) lifestyle even though they live in Islington.

Morrisons=working class, Waitrose =middle class
Ta=working class, thank you=middle class
Tidy houses=working class, mess = middle class.

I'm just going to fight my way through the clutter to bed.

fatfox · 01/09/2006 22:53

Uselessmum -Wot's M&P and should I be shopping there?

DumbledoresGirl · 01/09/2006 22:54

I think it is a middle class attribute to not throw your money around on clothes like Boden. The middle classes do not make a show of their money, the working classes (or the aspiring lower middle classes) do.

expatinscotland · 01/09/2006 22:54

Dumbie, you must control yourself and spare us your fantasies of David Tennant naked. Some of us are trying to eat .

Although, he is going to be in an upcoming episode of 'Who Do You Think You Are' - that geneology show - speaking with his real accent as the Paisley man he is.

DumbledoresGirl · 01/09/2006 22:55

That is when I fully expect to spar with you! I am wet just thinking of a programme devoted to DT!

Glassofwine · 01/09/2006 22:55

Curlew - all too true. I wince when PIL's talk about shopping at Morrisons.

Dh won't let me call him Darling when he goes home to Manchester as his family will laugh at him, even though that's what we both call each other at home.

DumbledoresGirl · 01/09/2006 22:55

Comments such as I have just made are definitely not middle class BTW!

expatinscotland · 01/09/2006 22:56

Supermarkets? Bah! I'm off to the farmer's market tomorrow morning.

Glassofwine · 01/09/2006 22:56

Dumbledoresg - I think that's a very mc thing to say. The middle classes love to talk about sex and swear very loudly.
