However the South East does not have an exclusive hold on wealthy areas.
Sectors in towns such as Salford, Warrington, Liverpool, and Wirral, have
postcode sectors ranked in the top 50 in the country.
At the other extreme, the South rarely includes the poorest areas. South of Luton
only Plymouth, Southampton, Portsmouth and Clacton-on-Sea include a postcode
sector amongst the poorest 200 sectors in the country.

Many postcode sectors in town centres are poor but contain very few households.
For the purposes of this table sectors with fewer than 500 households have been
excluded.
2.3 The Wealthiest Areas in Great Britain
This section looks at the concentration of wealth in Great Britain. It identifies the
areas which have the highest proportion of households earning over £100,000 ?
places where the wealthiest people in the country are concentrated.
It becomes apparent that high incomes are concentrated in London and the South
East where the top sectors have well over 10% of their resident households
earning an income of over £100,000. Table 3 shows those areas with the highest
proportion of households earning more than £100,000 and up to £1 million a
year.

2.4 The Poorest Areas in Great Britain
The other side of the story is shown in Table 4 which identifies pockets of
significant poverty. It ranks those areas with the highest proportion of households
earning less than £10,000 a year - the poorest people in the whole of Britain.
These pockets of poverty are less geographically concentrated than the wealthy.
The cities of Bradford, Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Leeds and Newcastle all have
postcode sectors with the highest proportion of their resident households earning
an income of less than £10,000.
