Okay - earlier this week my aged pc succumbed to a nasty virus. Tried to get rid of it with various programmes but no joy. I work from home and couldn't afford to be offline for any amount of time so I've had to get a new computer (was about to replace aforementioned ancient pc anyway).

But - I still have loads of work stuff on the old infected pc. My question is - can I get that stuff off the infected pc and transfer it onto my new one (not by emailing it) without infecting my new pc? Sorry if this is a ridiculous question - I'm a bit of a duffer in the technology department.

Hook your old PC up to the internet and check/clean it using housecall

Then hook your new PC up to the internet and go to Avast
and download / install

This checks your old PC and protects your new PC. Now all you need to do is move all your work stuff (I'm assuming they are MS office type files or similar)to an area that you keep running manual scans regularly whilst moving stuff, to double check they are clean.

Keep Avast running all the time on this new PC and accept the updates

Good luck - post back of you have any questions

forgot to say - move files using a USB key or external harddrive

Wow Kaloo - thanks for that. When you say move files with a USB key do you mean the wee plug in thing?
