HELP desperately need advice on FIL present

It was FIL birthday last week and DH forgot to get a present. I feel terrible as his daughter was away travelling and his other son (aged 31 with a good job, no expenses to speak of) got him a MUG.

I don't want to go crazy with spending but it is his 70th so would like to get him something nice. He is very into 'posh' things i.e. designery 'italiano' type things and loves coffee.

I was thinking of getting him a really smart set of coffee cups? But don't seem to be able find anything online (selfridges, liberty etc). I'd like something by a brand a coffee lover would recognise as I know he is interested in labels. Any ideas?

You're right. I had thought of that but couldn't come up with anything else.

Taking him out to eat is a great idea!

He and I are always arguing over whether Spaghetti House on Goodge Street is the best place to go in soho so could take him to one of the places I am always cajoling him to go to. Potentially a bit pricey as obvs MIL and me and DH would need to go but that might be a really nice idea.

What does your husband think he would like to do?

Alessi things are lovely. You could get an Alessi sugar bowl and a creamer for instance.

Alessi looks like exactly the right kind of thing.

My husband is useless. The way it usually works in their family is the kids (actually all adults) just send a link of what they want and then that is purchased for them. So they don't do much on the thinking of good presents front. I don't think they usually get his dad much.

He is a hard man to buy for as very into 'things' i.e. thoughtfulness doesn't really play into it. He is quite interested in labels/designer stuff etc.

Failing that, there might be one of those online bespoke type firms that would deliver him a particular type of coffee month for a year or something - you know, different beans to try from different places etc.

That should read each month for a year.

(I'm using a really old machine and keep getting a spinning rainbow.)

For gifts, I often buy from Sea Island Coffee as they do several unusual ones (I love their house blend). I think they do a coffee club too.

If he likes Italian, try Orso near Covent Garden. Had a superb meal there with FIL a few years ago - so good, it's somewhere I want to go back to. I am told Locanda Locatelli is still good (central London).
