Thomcat · 15/03/2004 15:57

I work 4 days a week from 9.30am until 6pm.
I work as a manager in a PR agency looking after mainly DVDs / film industry.

On my "day off (!)" I take Lottie to see therapists etc etc and all that goes hand in hand with having a child with special needs.

marialuisa · 15/03/2004 15:58

Not exactly, "sod it" completely, but would love to do school hours, term-time only but I'm not in that kind of job. It's possibel I might be able to get term-time only in a few months which I would leap at.

My previous job was a lot more flexible, work from home most days, only 9-2 when I did go into the office and a f/t salary, but the salary was crap (comparativey), the job was boring and going nowhere.

The time where I would have ben happy to be a SAHM has passed and our marriage wouldn't survive it anyway (even if i had a massive private income).

motherinferior · 15/03/2004 16:00

I frequently feel 'sod it' but only if that meant I could loll around eating chocolate and reading novels, with occasional interludes to shop for fabulously flattering clothes.

Unfortunately dd1 and dd2 only agree about chocolate

lavender1 · 15/03/2004 16:21

I work school hours 9.30am to 2.45pm 4-5 days a week as a landscape gardener...over the school holidays dh takes time off to look after the children so I can make up the hours...it works well

Helsbels · 15/03/2004 16:34

I work 3 days a week in IT support - I work with all men and they are brilliant. I am pg at the moment and will go on mat leave in June and return next Jan. DS 2.7 goes to nursery and new baby will too. I love working - I couldn't stay at home all the time. I am actually not looking forward to 6 months off but seeings as it is full pay and I would have to pay nursery if I came back early, it seems silly to do that. I am also a trained reiki therapist and and currently qualifying in holistic massage. I also practise other alternative therapies though not for money. I am worried that it will not be practical to work when ds goes to school and am looking at the possibility of moving into alt therapies over the next couple of years.

prufrock · 15/03/2004 18:25

Not any more

I did work in investment management 8-6, and often extra in the evenings when dd was asleep.
Today is the first day of my maternity leave and I feel so so happy to not be going back ever (although they don't know that yet)
The best thing is that I am still being paid for the next 20 weeks, and dd is still in full time nursery for 2 weeks, so I get to have a holiday. I just wish I wasn't feeling like a breathless beached whale

Tinker · 15/03/2004 18:30

I do work term time now and it has made sooo much difference - there's always light at the end of the tunnel now. Ease yourself back in for a few weeks only to wind down again for the end of term

HiddenSpirit · 15/03/2004 20:55

I work 22.12 hours per week over 3 days in Jobcentre Plus. Want to apply for term time only, but will need to look at finances first.

DP is a SAHD at the moment, but will be starting a placement soon to get his "paper based" qualifications in IT (he knows it all already, just doesn't have the little bit of paper employers want ) Hopefully when he's qualified and earning lots of dosh I can become a SAHM and look into the possibility of setting up my own business from home

Posey · 15/03/2004 21:01

Gave up my career as a nurse when dd arrived nearly 7 years ago and have never had a desire to go back. Between dd and ds I went to work in a pre-school. Started at 9:10 (as soon as dropped dd at school) til 12:30 ish. Term time only. If dd had an inset day from school she'd come with me to "help"; if she was ill, dh looked after her (he works afternoons / evenings only)
Will go back to it when ds is a bit older.

Slinky · 15/03/2004 21:06

Aww Posey

My older 2 love coming into nursery with me to "help" on their "inset days" - not very often as they tend to tack them onto end/beginning of holidays.

The children at nursery love them and scramble to get at them DD1 (8) sits with them and reads stories and DS1 (6) likes to demonstrate his painting skills and the nursery boys like him to play with them

Posey · 15/03/2004 21:16

Slinky - its great watching them isn't it?
Dd used to go to the pre school (thats how I got the job) so she felt she knew it all! Best was if her friend was there too (her little brother attended and we would let her stay as well.) The pair of them organising the little ones...hysterical

lucysmum · 15/03/2004 21:29

I work officially 4 days a week for one of the big 4 firms of accountants, do some stuff most evenings and weekends and take calls any time. Work the 5th day when a client has a project on. But I can go in late/come home early/work from home - whatever really as long as the clients are happy and I meet my targets.

(Pollingfold - sounds familiar, I do transaction work - but you just have to put your foot down and delegate. Clients understand better than colleagues about family commitments I think.)

Linnet · 15/03/2004 22:10

I work part time (job share) 22 hours a week over 4 days. Dd is in school and I finish early enough on two days to pick her up and on the other two days dh picks her up. Dh's hours work around my hours. So during the holidays he looks after dd while I'm working. It all works out fine.

I'm finishing work in 7 weeks time to start my maternity leave, I'll be off for 6 months, although entitled to a year but can't afford 6 months unpaid, so I'll be back at work two weeks before christmas. Really looking forward to being off right through the summer holidays.

Ronniebaby · 15/03/2004 22:41

I work. I am self employed, am a trainer in Telecoms and Computers, I work M.W.F occas Tues

I love my work as I can dictate the days I want to work. But I can end up driving 100's of miles and doing 14 hr days, but I get to spend Thursday with my DS.

If I don't work on a tues, I get to spend with DS to, which is ace.

Being self employed meaning no work no money, so I had to go back after DS was 8 weeks old.

Ghosty · 15/03/2004 22:54

I was a teacher and after DS went back part time. When we moved to NZ I started my own business working from home and work everything around DS and now DD ...
Love it .. wouldn't go back to work if you paid me (ha ha ha )

Northerner · 17/03/2004 09:48

I work 3 days a week as an account manager for an event management company.

oliveoil · 17/03/2004 12:25

I work Tue-Thurs, 9-4, decent money considering I spend a lot of my time on here. I work at a firm of architects. MIL has dd when I work so no childcare costs either, hurrah.

bundle · 17/03/2004 12:28

work 3 days a week as a radio producer, never feel like 'sod it', I love my job

Sonnet · 17/03/2004 12:42

Also work only Tues to Thursday - love spending Mon and Fri with DD2.
DD1 in year 2 gets very tired with afterschool club, don't get home until 6ish - how do all you others cope with tired children.
Would love to only work until 3.30 - thinking of asking if I can as don't really have enough to do to keep me busy for three full days.....

Sonnet · 17/03/2004 12:44

ooh Bundle - what radio station?? would love to listen in!!

bundle · 17/03/2004 12:46

mainly R4, some world service

zebra · 17/03/2004 12:53

Come on Bundle, which R4 programmes have you worked on!?

bundle · 17/03/2004 12:54

mainly medical stuff, some science

Bozza · 17/03/2004 12:59

Work 8.30 - 5.00 Tues to Thurs in IT support with some evenings standby (means taking a laptop home and fixing something if it fails). But with commute this is 7.45 to 6. DH takes DS to nursery, I collect. If a meeting dictates we swap. If DH working away I skip lunch.

JennH · 17/03/2004 14:40

I work 36hr weeks as an aux nurse, but hours really vary. I'm on mat leave at the moment, but when i go back i am doing 3 nights on and then 4 off. But if i do days it will change.
