It's not an accurate science unfortunately, jofeb04. In fact some consider measuring to be pretty useless- see here - and recommend trying on lots of bras and bearing some fitting rules in mind instead.

Don't measure. Get fitted at a good shop. You could probably measure your back size by yourself (where the bottom of the bra goes)but it's hard to measure cup size.

If you can't get a fitting arranged, measure your back size and try on various different cup sizes until you find the right fit. Try on back sizes above and below your measurement too (most women wear back sizes too large, so bras ride up your back and you lose support). Buy a bra that is tight enough on the smallest fasteners as it will probably get bigger with wear. Avoid double boobing. Make sure the underwire sits close against the chest.

And try on lots of styles. My boobs only fit certain clothes in certain bras IYSWIM. Balconette for some tops, more of a push up for others.

Do try to get a fitting though. I recommend Bravissimo, and I've heard some good things about John Lewis.

Agree with getting measured. I finally did it for the first time a few months ago and was told that I had the right size, but needed to be in a D cup instead of a B!
