Thick question about school uniform

Lasvegas · 02/08/2006 09:41

DD about to start pre-school I have uniform list saying grey pinafore, grey socks, navy polo shirt etc. Can I get them from any shop? So long as pinafore is grey can it be any style? The School also mentions a named school outfitters but is this simply for items that have school emblem/shield on ie blazer? She doesn't have to wear blazer until in reception. No-one is answering the phone at the school so I cannot ask them. Can anyone help?

pinifores/socks/t-shirts etc - get to asda!

only named stuff has to be bought at silly prices!

Depends how strict they are. Ours is very specific. Have you visited and did you notice any variation ? You could go to the outfitters and look at what they have and compare with other stores.

If the school is state: almost certainly buy from any high street shop.

If private: phone the uniform suppliers and ask whether you have to buy one specific style.

Lasvegas · 02/08/2006 09:49

It is private school. I have never visited when other children were there and cannot tell exact style of uniform from propectus. We are re-locating so not feasible to visit outfitters. Frogs good idea to call outfitters they don't sell on line but maybe they will post goods to me.

In that case it is most probably a specific style, but you may still be able to get the same in John Lewis or they might be able to recommend an outfitter closer to you who stock the same basics for another school (there are several generic suppliers like Trutex and Banner). If in doubt I'd buy the offical kit - one of everything - and see in the first week. Does the school host a second hand sale as that would give you pointers as to what is acceptable too.

Litz at the intoductory session I bought 2nd hand sweatshirts that had emblem on. Thanks I will phone outfitter and ask for details of some where local to me. To complicate matters I will never see what the other kids are wearing as childminder will do drop/collecting.

I would go and have a good nose round the outfitters and if it's still not clear, take a deep breath and ask them.

Otherwise, one of each and start asking around for who else is going there and what they do.

not a thick question lasvegas.
I personally buy plain stuff at any chain store. I find M&S is good value and wears well. Asda is very inexpensive as is Woolies this year and Tesco.
But your need for a blazer in reception (quite unusual) suggests a fairly strict attitude to uniform so I agree it may be worth checking with named outfitter.

Clary · 02/08/2006 10:14

oh sorry didn't see yr later post that it's a private school. In that case deffo phone outfitter but you may have to bite the bullet with them. Surely they will post you what you need?

MrsBadger · 02/08/2006 10:16

I'd definitely phone the outfitters, but if it is far away and will be lots of hassle, they won't post stuff or can't recommend a local supplier etc etc, there are worse things to do than spend £10 getting basics in Asda to tide her over the first few weeks, then if you discover you need things in a specific style you'll be near the outfitters and/or have access to second-hand things.

golly, what a long sentence!

Depends on the school. DD's uniform is pretty strict and has to be certain styles. Things like her pinafore, cardigan, summer dress, summer blazer & hat, winter coat and hat have to come from certain suppliers (John Lewis for us), but other items like blouses can be bought anywhere so long as the right style.

hulababy · 02/08/2006 10:21

Phone the outfitters and ask them. Have your DD's measurements with you if you can. Then you can preorder items, and arrange to go and collect them nearer the time.

julienetmum · 02/08/2006 10:23

Dd goes to a private school. Unless the uniform list states a specific style you should be OK. St dd's school nursery children can wear any grey pinafore and any white polo shirt but the jumper must be the school one.

Once she goes into reception then the pinafore has to be a specific style.

The school outfitters should have a full list of uiniform required for each section of the school.

Alternatively does the school have a website, you may be able to tell from there.

Thanks everone called outfitter who will post me what I need. Once I have measured DD will ask them bluntly if I can buy generic stuff frpm Asda, John Lewis etc. Have to say it was real shock to me that Pre-schoolers have to wear uniform at all, let alone a regulation school coat! She doesn't have to wear a school hat though.

Outfitter will probably say it has to be all their stuff anyway, anyluck getting in contact with the school. The preschoolers might not all wear the full regulation uniform.

Private school near us all wear the regulation uniform which is specific to that school, definatly no one wearing similar but cheaper outfits all from the same supplier.
