Yet somehow a mooncup is gross to some of you?

Why?

OP posts:
shhhh · 29/07/2006 16:26

apparently asda are looking into the issue with xs packaging. They are due in the future to launch products with less packaging. Thats what I heard locally anyway.

But QE is right, if you feel strongly then you should write to the companies or even stop buying these products BUT the last point probably won't work unless there is huge back up iykwim.

Caligula · 29/07/2006 17:14

The Austrian (or was it Swiss?) WI did a massively successful campaign to get shoppers to unpack all their produce (or lots of it) at the till, so it slowed down the shopping queues and left the packaging for the supermarkets to clear up.

The supermarkets are now saying that they are definitely looking at ways to reduce packaging and where it is necessary, to make it biodegradable.

Blandmum · 29/07/2006 17:35

Totaly off topic, but my mother used to work in a shop during the second world war. All the dry goods were wrapped for each customer.....none of them came pre packed. So if you wanted 4 pund of flour, that is what they wrapped for you. Every took their own shopping basket. Wrapping was kept to a minimum.

She was ace at wrapping the Christmas parcels, I can tell you!

Bucketsofdinosaurs · 29/07/2006 17:38

I don't think anyone should feel bullied by this thread. Obviously reusable sanpro (eg Mooncup, washable pads) are better for the environment as you can't recycle disposable ones. That's a fact, nobody is saying Mooncup users are better people.
None of us are saints . I bottlefed my kids, I give my 18m old whole grapes, I smoke when the kids are in bed, the list goes on. People are welcome to remind me/inform me about the bad things but it's up to me to give a toss whether I'm being judged or not. And funnily enough I don't. Stop being so sensitive people!

spidermama · 29/07/2006 17:43

My good friend from Totnes, who's every inch a Mooncuppist, had a horrifying experience trying to rinse hers out at a service station. The tap came on really hard blasting the contents all over her dress so she emerged from the toilets looking like an axe murderer.

She went back to washable pads for a bit. She lives in Brighton now and whilst you can take the girl out of Totnes, you can't take Totnes out of the girl and she's Mooncuppin' once more.

Daisyb00 · 29/07/2006 17:58

Well, I'm willing to give this Mooncup thing a shot - if nothing else to save money on pads.
Have just got DS completely potty trained, so it's about bl**dy time I got out of 'nappies' myself!! (tmi!)
Would never have heard of Moonies if I hadn't have read about them on MN. Now the only problem I have is trying not to lose it somewhere around the bathroom / handbag(?) etc at the crucial time...

FanjoandZooey · 29/07/2006 18:11

"nobody is saying Mooncup users are better people"

well that's it then, I'm definitely not getting one

Seriously, shhh, I didn't set out to annoy you or criticise you. Sorry if it turned out like that.

expatinscotland · 29/07/2006 18:13

i'm on my third cycle of mooncupping, and i have to say we've really hit our stride . it's now just as quick as using tampons, after a few hitches in the first two cycles. sooo much better and it really seems my cycles are lighter now.

new users - give it three cycles! the first couple there may be some hitches.

as spider pointed out, make sure the tap is running BEFORE sticking your mooncup under it to rinse! great point.

Caligula · 29/07/2006 19:38

pmsl at the axemurderer totnes girl

Blandmum · 29/07/2006 19:42

Doesn't that dangly bit at the bottom of the cup rub? Honest question.

I'm not squeemish, as I used to use a diaphragm for birth control.

I don't know if I could be organiosed enough to have it to hand when I started my period.

Caligula · 29/07/2006 19:43

You have to cut it off MB.

I've often wondered if there's any difference between using a mooncup and using a diaphragm.

Blandmum · 29/07/2006 19:51

My diagphragm used to hold back the blood if my period started while it was in place (you have to leave it in place after the 'event' to allow the spermicide to kill off all the sperm IYSWIM)

sorry if that it too much info!

foxinsocks · 29/07/2006 19:51

I wish this thread title would disappear - it makes me slightly queasy every time I see it move up the active convos

(I know, I'm a wuss)

Bucketsofdinosaurs · 29/07/2006 20:03

MB The Mooncup works just like a diaphragm - you can put it in in the morning you are a due on and you know it's not going to give you Toxic Shock Syndrome, leave fibres, suck you dry etc. (Sorry for that last one but I know some people do use tampons the same way, yuck.)

Bucketsofdinosaurs · 29/07/2006 20:04

Actually I don't know that much about diaphragms TBH How do you get them clean before each use?

DarrellRivers · 29/07/2006 20:04

I am a convert to the mooncup after reading about it on MN.
now on second cycle and finding it gets easier as you become more practiced
i love the fact you don't have to buy tampons or remember to carry them around with you/or worry where to dispose of them
i used to find tampons a bit painful to remove towards the end of a period and now i've got the hang of breaking the seal on the mooncup, there seems to be no discomfort
and after all i deal with most of the household's poo, urine and vomit,(apart from DHs) so a little extra blood really seems neither here nor there

Toothache · 29/07/2006 20:04

spew<

At least I don't have to look at my period slopping around in a rubber cup!

Period due:
Wipe arse - see bit of blood - insert tampon. few hours later - pull string to remove tampon in toilet - Insert another.

SEE.... no sloppy dripping menstrual gunk anywhere!

THATs why mooncups make me SSSSSSSPEW!

Moomin · 29/07/2006 20:06

i think fanjoandzoey is quite right - i also am open to having things pointed out to me and i'm glad when i find something out that can help me/the dds/my life/the environment, etc.

As an exmaple, through recommendations from posters on mumsnet over the last 5 years i have:
read the joanna blythman book about childrens food being crap and i totally changed my attitude to food for them;
had fasicnating debates with posters about religion and ended up having both dds christened;
found out shed-loads of info about ttc when trying for no.2, and received brilliant support when it took 2 years;
changed from flushing tampons to wrapping & binning tampons and now i USE A MOONCUP AND I LOVE IT!!!! (tech - can we have a mooncup emoticon - maybe a smug face with a halo?)

Gingerbear · 29/07/2006 20:07

I keep thinking 'Duelling Fanjos' (aka theme tune from Deliverance)
comme ca...

Moomin · 29/07/2006 20:07

i haven't, however, leanred hpw to check for typos accurately

Blandmum · 29/07/2006 20:08

You wash them with ordinary soap and let them air dry.

I loved mine and it worked very well.

You have to put in some spermicide and press the sides together and then wang it up your bits . You check to see it is in place and off you go.

You can also ut it in prior to nookie, but that did sometime feel rather like taking you harp to the party and worrying that no one would ask you tp play

Don't need it now as I have been 'done' [grin

Toothache · 29/07/2006 20:08

Mooncup Emoticon???? How about a sickly face with menstrual gunk in a cup.

spidermama · 29/07/2006 20:10

That's good Ginge.

Gingerbear · 29/07/2006 20:13

If you strung some dental floss across the rim of a mooncup, perhaps you could play it like a banjo?

Gingerbear · 29/07/2006 20:13

hang on, will go and try it......
