Yet somehow a mooncup is gross to some of you?

Why?

but yes, also in some areas in spain the sewers are so rubbish that you have to bin used toilet roll.

foxinsocks · 29/07/2006 15:09

toilet roll goes all mushy and into bits

tampons and pads by their nature absorb water and get bigger

I'm not having a go because when I started my periods I flushed them (because I didn't know any better) but I was subsequently re-educated a year or so later and have never looked back

I flush kandoo wipes.

You see I am swayed by the packet telling me it is ok.

Guilty!

shhhh · 29/07/2006 15:12

spanish, turkish and chinese..????! No relevance.! Like QE said, i'm not the only one. What reply do you want..? "Oh yes I will change my mind and will no longer flush but will bin" Bullies.

Anyway due to pregnancy no periods for 9+ months..surely that will please everyone and the enviroment..? .

foxinsocks · 29/07/2006 15:13

yes kandos are dreadful for that - I think they even appeared on watchdog or one of those trading standards programmes because they blocked so many loos!

SenoraPostrophe · 29/07/2006 15:13

so how come all these companies get away with saying things are flushable when they aren't?

shhhh · 29/07/2006 15:14

QE.... tut tut tut (as shhh taps her foot gently so as not to come accross as aggressive) .

foxinsocks · 29/07/2006 15:14

Nobody is bullying you it's just that you have a choice. You don't have to flush them down the loo, you can put them in the bin and save yourself (or someone else) the trouble of a potential blocked drain and be kinder to the environment! It's a small thing to do in the greater scheme of life but it does make a difference.

i had to have my drains unblocked last year after flushing parazone wipes, because the packet said you could, have decided that actually, wipes etc shouldnt go down loo, i have never flushed sanitary towels down the toilet especially as i use massive night time ones.
my granny used to keep a bin by the loo, for bog roll, st's etc.

SenoraPostrophe · 29/07/2006 15:17

no-one is bullying anyone and no-one is being self righteous. equally no one is saying you should bin bog roll - I posted about the fact that you can't in spain because I thought it was interesting.

we are however disagreeing with your argument that doing things like flushing tammies is a "personal choice". yes, los of people do it, but most of them do it because they don't know any better - no-one is condemning them. But yes, we are saying that people should think twice once they know about the effects of their actions.

Thankyou SenoraPostrophe. Just had a little laugh at the sizing bit though. Bit like when I had my cap fitted. Like that joke about condom sizes Small, Large and Liar! Will definately look into getting one though. Sounds like a realy good idea. Ill try anything once. I find tampons quite painful to use and I suffer from pretty heavy periods so sounds good to me. Oh especialy like the bit about swimming with it too. I love swimming and often have to watch from the side cause I cant use tampons. This has realy turned my head...

QueenEagle · 29/07/2006 15:20

It is very true that everyone has the choice. It doesn't make it wrong though if people choose not to. Bullying is probably too strong a word but it does seem to me that shhh is being unfairly picked on.

It's not wrong, it's just different or better.

SenoraPostrophe · 29/07/2006 15:22

actually I think it is wrong if people actively choose not to (i.e. they know why they shouldn't do it, but do it anyway all the time, not just when it's awkward etc).

foxinsocks · 29/07/2006 15:24

it is wrong

QueenEagle · 29/07/2006 15:24

sp, are you talking specifically about flushing tampons or things in general?

I could think of quite a few things that could come under that description.

SenoraPostrophe · 29/07/2006 15:27

I'm talking about flushing tampons in particular, but yes, other things too. the flushing tammies argument is quite a clear cut one because it is not really anything of an effort to bin them, where it is an effort to use terry nappies/walk rather than drive etc.

QueenEagle · 29/07/2006 15:31

sp I agree, but very often what is easy for one person isn't quite so simple and straightforward to the next person. It's all baout educating people and encouraging them to change their bad habits, like I said before. That is not wrong, in the true sense of the word.

Gingeme · 29/07/2006 15:31

Yes but where do they go when you bin them? They are not bio degradable so they sit and rot on land fills for years and years! Did you have incinerators in the girls loos at school? All my sanitary wear went in there till I was 17 and left school.

shhhh · 29/07/2006 15:32

Tampax say that they can be flushed as they are biodegradable. Any one get carrier bags when they go to Tesco or Asda or Next etc..? These are just as big a concern to the environment and animals..?? How many of you don't use them..?

Gingeme · 29/07/2006 15:34

I try to reuse the same ones each visit. If I dont I put them in the re cycling bins just outside our flats or the recycle things in the shop especialy for carrier bags

shhhh · 29/07/2006 15:34

no incinerators at my school. They were put into the bin.

QueenEagle · 29/07/2006 15:34

ah interesting you mention carrier bags - If I have enough room, I decline a bag from any subsequent stores when out shoopping in town.

I always take my tesco bags to their recycling bin although I do have half a dozen "bag for life" bags.

What about all the unecessary packaging - do you buy the one with less packaging or the one you know your kids will like?
