Yet somehow a mooncup is gross to some of you?

Why?

OP posts:
SenoraPostrophe · 29/07/2006 14:19

I'm squeamish about a lot of things but I still do them.

But ok, anyone who has a genuine phobia of blood is let off. I kind of suspect that doesn't apply to very many people on this thread though. how did you bring yourselves to change your children's nappies?

shhhh · 29/07/2006 14:22

I change my dd's nappies fine thankyou. Don't know the relevance though as there is no blood involved just poo..??! [confussed emoticon]

shhhh · 29/07/2006 14:23

Oh and btw they are disposable nappies..Take it another lecture is coming.... [yawn]

Caligula · 29/07/2006 14:23

I wasn't jumping on you shhh, merely pointing out that I find your argument unconvincing. But I nearly always do find the "freedom of choice" argument unconvincing, unless the choice involved doesn't have a knock-on effect on the wider community.

Senora, you may be right, but according to that link Fanjoandzoe posted, it's a problem. And it just seems to me that this is just one tiny little thing everyone could do, which really doesn't make much difference to their lives (unlike giving up a car for example). As you imply, washing your hands is so easy! (Well at least it is at the moment, if they start rationing it and charging us £10 a shot, I'll change my view...)

QueenEagle · 29/07/2006 14:24

Well, I have to post in support of the mooncup. I used one for the first time last month and checked it about as often as I would using tampons. I was quite surprised at how little blood loss there was each time so I gradually got more confident at leaving it longer each time. Dead easy peasy lemon squeazy to insert and remove.

The only down side was whenI woke up in the morning it had leaked a bit even though it wasn't full or anything, but I guess that could be from being in a lying down position? Can anyone enlighten me as to why that could have been?

I am due again in a few days time and actually quite looking forward to it!

p.s. It's probably not a good idea to invite dh's to take a look even if you are in awe of what menstrual loss looks like!!

FanjoandZooey · 29/07/2006 14:25

It's not about the amount of cotton used, Senora, it's about flushing your sanitary wear down the toilet and having it end up in the sewerage system and hence in the rivers and seas. This is anti-social behaviour on a par with urinating in doorways, I agree. We're discussing flushing tampons, not using them. I use them too, FWIW.

Caligula · 29/07/2006 14:27

Exactly, I wasn't saying people shouldn't use tampons if they want to. But they shouldn't be flushed, any more than you would flush a nappy.

shhhh · 29/07/2006 14:32

ok I will take the blame for millions of other women who probably flush. Next time I will lie about my actions as I believe so many others do "just to conform to what a mner is" .

Just to add : I didn't think this was an agrument so didn't feel I was arguing a point.
But I will go seen as I'm so antisocial.Enjoy your mooncups.

FanjoandZooey · 29/07/2006 14:36

But why would you choose to flush them, shhhh, knowing they are going to pollute beaches and possibly cause harm to wildlife? I am assuming from your posts that you weren't aware of this before, but now? I find your posts really strange and aggressive.

I don't know if you have a phobia or what, but assume if you can manage to bin your sanitary products in a public toilet, as you state you can, you could do the same at home.

shhhh · 29/07/2006 14:39

f&z I said why in a post earlier. I am coming across as agressive and strange..?? Ok then, I will add that to my list of : antisocial and pathetic.

Thanks for trying to work out my personality BUT you are so so so wrong..! I just have an opinion and only I can change it.

FanjoandZooey · 29/07/2006 14:45

I'm not trying to work out your personality, shhh, I don't know you. But your posts on this thread do seem aggressive and strange.

When your actions affect others they are more than 'just an opinion'. You're entitled to your opinion but when your actions affect us all you will find yourself being questioned about them, on occasion.

shhhh · 29/07/2006 14:50

I don't think I am coming across as strange and aggressive, just defending myself.

I see exactly what you are saying BUT it's my choice to do what I want..!! The same as people who drive 4x4's, or who throw litter or who don't recycle.

QueenEagle · 29/07/2006 14:55

Going way off topic aren't we ladies?

I know how bad flushing tampons is - I did it still up till starting with the mooncup last month and I know dd flushes hers. I can't explain really why I did, it's just habit I guess.

It seems a bit unfair to be jumping on shhhh when she is doing what millions of others (and a fair few of those are MNers I bet) do. Doesn't make it right I hear you cry - no it doesn't but everyone could do with a bit of educating to change their bad habits.

Do all you (seemingly) self-righteous MNers do no wrong ever, at all? Those who cast stones blah blah.....

SenoraPostrophe · 29/07/2006 14:55

oh ok. that´ll teach me not to skim read. the mooncup does cover both angles though, doesn't it?

shhhh · 29/07/2006 14:58

QE thats exactly the point that I was trying to make. Thankyou.

I am obviously stupid or honest enough to admit it. Like I said before I know I am NOT the only one.

foxinsocks · 29/07/2006 15:00

tbh shhh apart from the environment etc... flushing tampons/pads means you have a much greater chance of blocking your drains and if not your drains, someone elses further down the line! At our last rental place, the woman before had flushed her pads down the loo and the drains overflowed and it was like something biblical outside!!

Gingeme · 29/07/2006 15:00

Good afternoon ladies. Ive just taken a good 20 mins reading through this thread and I must admit I have never heard of a mooncup apart from on MN. I remember reading something in history at school about 'ladies thimbles' which sounded very similur to this device. Where would I get one from? Doesnt sound alot different from using a cap which was my form of contraceptoin(SORRY TMI)till I fell preg. Where would I get one from? Would love to try it out in Oct after babys born. Was talking to my dh about it and he said'dont the handles get stuck'!! Silly sod.

foxinsocks · 29/07/2006 15:02

(oh and I wish you could have seen the plumber's face when he had to fish out all the used pads/tampons that had created the block )!

SenoraPostrophe · 29/07/2006 15:03

there is, in my opinion, a big difference between doing something vaguely anti-social (which we all do sometimes), and in defending the right to do those things as a matter of "choice".

ssshhh is saying that everyone should do what they like with regards to this kind of stuff, and lots of us disagree.

Gingeme · 29/07/2006 15:05

My dh was a plumber for 15 years and he said that towels and tampons along with condoms were usualy the worst culprits for drain blockages. He even found a snake once too still alive.....

shhhh · 29/07/2006 15:06

so what do you lot do with used toilet roll..?? Let me guess...you put it into the bins..Being the good citizens you all are..

SenoraPostrophe · 29/07/2006 15:06

Gingeme - mooncip site here

Gingeme · 29/07/2006 15:06

ssshhh the chinese do that and Turkish people.

SenoraPostrophe · 29/07/2006 15:07

shh - did you bother to read the link that ranny posted at all? loo roll is fine (being readily biodegradeable and all), other things are not fine to flush down the loo.

QueenEagle · 29/07/2006 15:08

We had a drainage problem last year due to the woman a few doors down flushing baby wipes down the loo. Never crossed my mind really not to flush tampons then. Although I would never flush a towel.

The thing is, on the tampon packets it does say they are flushable. tbh I don't look much beyond this when I am in lazy arse mode. My thoughts have been - will this block the toilet/drains? It's not - will they end up on the beach?

Like I said, we could all do with being educated and kicked up the arse to do a bit more for the environment.
