desperate, sorry, ideas for 7 yr old boy birthday

Sorry, but I'm desperate. I have also known what to get ds, but this time I'm stumped and days are running out for me to get him a birthday pressie.

Thanks to over-indulgent grandparents, great grandparents and aunty he has already a lot - bike, scooter, skate board, roller blades, game boy, watch, walkie talkies, too much lego etc etc

He is active, forever playing outside. Nanny has got him a 'discovery set' with binoculors, magnifying glass, bug collecting tub etc. He's into playing outside, quite active, doesn't generally play with toys.

He wants a knife. He wants a pet. He will not be getting either.

Hoenstly at a loss. Any ideas?

If you have space what about a trampoline? I got a 12' one from B&Q for £109 the other day - my boys (13 and 7) think it's fab.

i'd get down to millets/Tiso/woolies and get some camping gear- tesco even has some
a tent
a sleeping bag
some camo net
a torch
I got dd some stuff at christmas which included army surplus gear like billy cans and a tiny little stove( to be used under supervision) she goes off on 'expeditions' makes a shelter and i come out and cook baked beans with her on her army stove. will try and find you a link.

a tents a cool idea he could camp in the garden
if hes 7 what about money with a promise of a day just you and him shopping maybe new game for his game boy
my lads 10 just got him a ds lite he loves it

monkey · 27/07/2006 18:17

these are really good ideas. I have tho spent the last 2 nights camping in the back garden with him (too soft to let him & ds out alone as the garden has no fence and is visible from lane & remember in uk few years back of a kid taken from camping in back garden and killed) so am heading for 3rd (and final ) night in tent. I feel ideas nearly nearly nearly there but not quite hit nail on head yet.

He'd love a trampoline but out garden not fenced of and loads of little ones round here just wouldn't be safe unfortunately.

how about a wormery? you can get kids ones that are see through so they can watch the worms doing their work (mine are desperate for one as I also won't allow them a proper pet!)

golf actually not too bad idea, but no where to play, so now wondering about maybe a plug n' play golf game, or snowboarding (he really likes skiing). (or even shooting, or is that too non-pc?) (so it's sort of active & can do with brother too)

Has anyone got or tried a plug n play game? Are they any good?

Nice art set. Telescope (for seeing stars). Else, microscope?

roisin · 28/07/2006 13:05

Hmm... 7th seems to be very hard for some reason.

ds2 had a soldering iron and electronics kits for his 7th! Went down well here!

He also got quite a lot of money from rellies as we were unable to make suggestions, and he hasn't spent most of it yet - and that was in May! So I don't think he particularly has needs/desires! (Other than pets - but I'm with you on that one.)

monkey · 28/07/2006 13:12

I'm sure he'd love a soldering iron - he wants to be an inventor when he grows up. But where do you get them, what do you do with them? do tell more, this might be interesting.

dh likes idea of snowboard plug n play game, but now can only find on uk sites that won't deliver abroad, so stumped.

getting mighty bored of sitting at this computer.

7 is bloody difficult isn't it?

How about those sea monkeys. You can get an aquarium with the packets and when you put them in water they hatch and swim round..you can get different ones. The aquarium comes with different sections..ie hatchery, eating area etc.And he can look at them through a magnifying glass. It's pretty good!

doobydoo · 28/07/2006 13:17

Some of the plug and play games are ok.But seem to stop working after a few months.I think ds prefers playstation.He does like plug and play Pacman![he is nearly 7}

roisin · 28/07/2006 13:24

this is a thread all about soldering irons!!

roisin · 28/07/2006 13:25

We got the soldering iron and kits from Maplin and we've just ordered more kits from Madlab.

Blossomhill · 28/07/2006 13:39

My 8 yr old was bought loads of knex sets and they have gone down so well with him

monkey · 28/07/2006 15:09

sea monkeys sound good. now quite keen on snowboard game but I'll be damned if I can get it over here. so bloody frustrating. found a million uk sites with it.

Where are you monkey?Ds has a snowboard game. It's plugged into thre tv and you stand on the board and control it that way,He has a skateboard one as well. And there is a footie one i think.Argos DOES SNOWBOARD ONES.

monkey · 31/07/2006 13:52

sounds exactly what I want - standing on boad. can't see it in argos catalogue, have looked. not in uk so makes it difficult. all sites I've seen it on won't deliver outside uk

is it any good btw? Does your ds like it? skateboarding one sounds good too.

He does like it..it takes a while to get the hang of.I think he got it when he was 5,which was too young. Now he is at the right age. What a bummer not being able to get hold of one.Maybe relatives could find it?
