shock horror - i was flabberghasted to say the least. started working for building company and now becomes your stereotypical sun reader. in the bible it says give me a boy til he's 7 and i will give you the man. - my meaning is that i thought his views would have been fixed by now becuase i thought i had taught them all brillintly.

so he said something to the effect of ( infront of his GF) that all the asians in oldham got everything didn't they mum

apart from me wonering where he got the balls to say such a comment - and he did it with sincerit - not to kick off becuase he knows i will cause ultimate embarrassment - i'm wondering why the big wide world has had such an influence on him since may this year.

anyway i launchedinto some rampage ( in front of the gf) about lazy arse white people like your uncle xxxxx who has 7 kids and claims incapacity, unemployment, diability all to get out of paying child support for 4 of them from the first GF beucase he's a lazy are fucker.

why is it only white people predominantly live on the estates? have they been afforded less opportunity than asian people? no thats not true. the asians i worked with worked 2 jobs or 3 jobs supporting not just themselves and their immediate family but oher family members too. they get what they have becuase they work for it - most people if they try to either get a job or get further education can. you are a case in point. so dont come here with all this shit cos i'm not having it.

right - says he.
doesnt help that i think the gf's family are racist i dont know if there is a recist spectrum - i duppose your just racist - but they are the kind that think its ok to tell a racist joke but dont preach about immigration or "sending them all home" iykwim. it just doesn't help with the over arching ethos of it not being right.

apart from mnet and the middle class libral pinkos i work with sometimes i think i am the only non racist white person on the planet. i can't belive the enormity of it.

Stick to your guns as you are right
While he amy be influenced in the short term by the pikeys (? perhaps, maybe a gross generalisation1!!!) he is currently working with and therefore under the influence of, ultimimately, even though he may deny it, YOu are the most influential person in his life
Keep giving him the same message
Teenagers often spout crap for a bit

We all get influenced by others when we're young..maybe he made the comment in front of you because he wanted it to be challenged...

I can't escape racist people either, especially on a recent course which had a big thing about prejudice - it was scary.. I try really hard not to talk about the issue tbh because I have to be so careful of the words I chose that I start sounding racist against white people or black people somehow... why can't we just all be the same but different to each other

Ask him if he can actually find Oldham on a map, or name any significant facts about it... Not surprised you are horrified but it does sound like teenager trying out opinions stuff (obviously very, very, dim ones) rather than active malice.

No Custy not true. Admittedly the construction industry has many people in it who aren't exactly ermmm guardian readers, and OH was once rather bemused to be told by a rather elderly bloke that he had come to the country and taken the white peoples jobs...(he was bemused because there were about ten vacancies going at the time).
But most people are mature enough to realise that colour has nothing to do with how hard a person works.....
It drives me nuts when OH starts quoting things he 'read' in the sun though, but it's an occupational hazard; job in construction industry = loads of copies of the sun lying around ......

Suspect FA's right and he was seeing what you'd make of it.

edam · 25/07/2006 23:04

If you really want to put the wind up him, sneak a copy of Wednesday's Grauniad (with the Society supplement) into his work bag...

Fastasleep · 25/07/2006 23:05

What hang on what... hang on, hang on hang on hang on..

hang on...

FA's what?

Did you say.... did you say..... right?!

Well, law of averages, gotta happen one day.
