got a letter this morning summoning me, have already done it 8 years ago and apparently you have to do it again (unless you have done it within 2yrs or something) I don't work (sahm) and i think I can get childcare as MIL retires soon. I'm not sure if i will be allowed to be excused from doing it

In your position, I'd do it.

The way I see it, if you want the right to live in a decent society, you have to take responsibility for that - a jury of one's peers can't just be made up from people who have nothing better to do.

I feel quite strongly about this.

zippitippitoes · 24/07/2006 14:43

I would do it...I think people should have to do it unless there is a very very strong reason not to..I thought they were making it more difficult to be excused but apparently not

I dont think you can be exused unless you have an illness that would make it dufficult, or if you have a holiday abroad already booked.

TheLadyVanishes · 24/07/2006 14:44

actually didn't think about not doing it,dh mentioned he was away the first week of it (not sure how that made any difference)and said i should try to get out of it. I did it for 6 wks the last time and thats my only worry tbh and its pointless deferring it as it may clash with other things in the future

I think the judge often has an idea of how long the trial's likely to take and if there's one that's going to be spectacularly long (these are rare though) then there's more scope for excusing yourself from that trial.

That said, mine was due to last 6 weeks and lasted 4 in the end - the only excuse the judge would accept was a holiday booked and paid for in those six weeks - there was a man on the jury who had a job interview and court worked round it.

TheLadyVanishes · 24/07/2006 14:51

tbh i found it very interesting (and boring at the same time) and at least i will know the drill so to speak when i go this time round. We are also extending soon and that was another one of DH reasons not do it (don't think they will accept that somehow )

Yes, there's always that.

Which court is it? I was more eager to do mine as it was at the Old Bailey, but I'm shallow.

TheLadyVanishes · 24/07/2006 15:03

old bailey would be great but unfortunately not, newcastle cc

Blimey i have never been, never been called, how do the select people & what do you actually have to do, i have no idea please shead some light?

hotmama · 24/07/2006 15:21

I think it depends on what you did last jury duty?

I did jury duty in 2000- I did a murder trial. They said if I get called in the next 10 years to let them know that I sat on a murder trial and that they will probably let me off.

Did find it really interesting though - and very scary - when you hear all the evidence. and

bubbaloo · 24/07/2006 17:09

I did it a few years ago and loved it.I also worked at the Bailey until last year and would definately not want to do it there-most of the cases are horrendous!

SoMuchToBits · 24/07/2006 19:17

I did it earlier this year, and really enjoyed it,as well as feeling I had done something useful as a citizen. The case I was on was quite interesting, though. It was a woman accused of grievous bodily harm, when she bit a man's penis.
