The techies on MN might be able to help.

You could also create auto-forwarding rules to send them straight to the Deleted items without intervention. Or to stop them from being downloaded in the first place.

Do you know why you're receiving them?

apronstrings · 20/07/2006 12:32

I had them for a while and they just stopped - but I was only getting a couple a day

zippitippitoes · 20/07/2006 12:33

are they going to your spam box/filter?

you have to chill and check them all for messages which do not include the hobbitt or jonathan livingstone seagull and cut and paste the best examples to this thread weirdy emails Thank you for your co operation

cremolafoam · 20/07/2006 12:33

not a clue. just started about 5 months ago. i think that my email address has been phished as i do a lot of shopping online.

zippitippitoes · 20/07/2006 12:35

do you have a website?

I find a lot of them are a guess at an address based on my website adress

SaintGeorge · 20/07/2006 12:37

If you are getting that many each day then it would probably be easier and more secure to dump your email address and start a new one.

Try to avoid using names in the email address, random arrangements of letters are more secure from random spamming.

cremolafoam · 20/07/2006 12:40

no website, but i think changing my email address is probably the answer.
here is an example of hte kind of thing

If you scroll down the email does it finish off with a piece of random writing?

I agree you need to change your email address

zippitippitoes · 20/07/2006 12:42

I suspect that some of them are related to my space msn etc

cupcakes · 20/07/2006 12:43

we get about ten of these every day as well. We used to have furefox which sent them straight to junk but sibce going back to Outlook I have to delete them myself. Our address is my husband's name and a lot are addressed to people with just similar names.

Salamander · 20/07/2006 12:43

It seems like bad luck.

Your PC details/e-mail address have been grabbed by someone.

It can be very difficult to avoid visiting 'dodgy' websites.

You can spend all your time making sure your PC isn't used for Porn, Money Laundering, Nigerian Crime, Purchasing Pharmaceuticals, and still you get these things.

My DWs internet-based e-mail account and our home one have both been flooded in the past.

Very unpleasant.

Her old work e-mail account used to be inundated with disgusting stuff every day but that was because she worked with a load of old perves...

Google: Free Anti Spam Software, pick one and try it.

Commerical mail accounts (Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail etc) have good anti spam software built in, but when you buy a domain and set up your own email using POP3 that's when all the issues start. Whatever you do, don't reply to it

I keep a commercial mail account that I use to register on any site and a completely seperate account that I use to send receive real mail from.

Let me know if you eed any more help

alison222 · 20/07/2006 13:32

There is an unsubscribe button on it somewhere but it was called something else - they did then take me off their lists.
They are a pain aren't they but I onl;y had a few not 400 a day AHHH

Furball · 20/07/2006 13:34

I was told if you try and unsubscribe, they know that the account is being used so will send you even more!

I too sufer with about 3 or 4 aday offering me such things as penis enlargement - I always forward them onto DH!

Salamander · 20/07/2006 13:47

DO NOT REPLY to any of these messages

just delete them, or better still don't download them from the server (if using Outlook)

the Unsubscribe thing is a trick

Kaloo20 · 20/07/2006 17:12

what type of mail account are you using - commerical or own domain + POP3 mail ... If the latter, to what reader/client?

moondog · 20/07/2006 17:15

Oh it really pisses me off too.
I am enraged to get things like

'Hot babe but nothing stirring in trouser region??' or some such, about five times a day.

Salamander · 21/07/2006 11:33

that's not nice moondog!!!

is it just you that uses the PC?

there aren't any teenage boys visiting... ahem... 'inappropriate' sites, are there?

SenoraPostrophe · 21/07/2006 11:57

It's not usually anything to do with dodgy websites - if your email address has ever appeard anywhere on the internet you're stuffed, or if you have a common address (either [email protected] or [email protected]) then eventually some spammer will guess it and then you're on the list.

the best thing to do is to use Outlook (rather than outlook express), which has a very powerful and 98% accurate spam filter. you still get the spams but they go directly into a spam folder - s at least you can check occasionally for missed real mails.

or if you want the drastic solution, change your email address.

SenoraPostrophe · 21/07/2006 11:58

I get 100s a day by the way. but that's because I run several websites. the punishment for convicted spammers should be having to sit down and read mails from all of the people they sent spam to.

SSSandy · 21/07/2006 11:59

I run a regular spycheck scan which keeps it in bay, then after about 2 weeks it starts up again. I think they track you via internet usage/cookies; although I don't write my email up on websites, they still manage to track it down.

SenoraPostrophe · 21/07/2006 12:01

sssandy - no they don't - you're talking about spyware and that's nothing to do with spam. you shouldn't need to check for spyware so often unless you regularly install free software.

SenoraPostrophe · 21/07/2006 12:02

it only has to have appeared once on any website though, and like I say, many emails are guessable (eg a spammer might run a programme that sends mails to every combination of 8 letters @hotmail). Once you're on a list, you're on a list and there is nothing you can do.

SSSandy · 21/07/2006 12:02

Every time I do, it finds about 30 viruses, I get them deleted and then the PC is ok for about 2 weeks or so (don't have much idea about how PCs work TBH)
