no experience here, but a fair number of houses in deepest cornwall/dartmoor don't have piped gas and lots of them either buy big gas cannister thingies that sit outside the house and connect to a pipe or have oil burners...

Tortington · 19/07/2006 11:23

so tell more malory - hows your leccy bill? how dya keep kids warm?

Found this in Hansard! MP for Carlisle asked about how many winter fuel payments had been made to old folk in his constituency in 1999:

"In 1998/99, there were 13,157 WFPs made in the Carlisle constituency totalling £283,210. In 1999-00, there were 14,938 payments totalling £1,138,350."

So it must get quite cold...

Tortington · 19/07/2006 11:24

oh more information on gas canisters and oil burners please

Don't know about Carlyle but my parents live in Scotland in an all electric house and they are never cold. When I was a child the only heating was the electric fire in the lounge - which I used to dry my hair!!

They are pensioners and can afford the bills! (I am not sure what they are on average a quarter - they are on hols at the moment so I can't ask)

I have no mains gas and have an oil tank in the garden
my hubby can install heating system like we have or different with no mains gas

She knows I live fairly close to where she is moving would be happy to bhelp her
I don't think that the lack of mains gas should stop her moving to a nice place

Tortington · 19/07/2006 11:27

ni oppressed one i was being sincere with my thanks - sincerity not usually my strong suit i know

same with fimbo - meant it - no sarcasm.

lareg oil tank in garden, oil fueled boiler in the little outhouse thingy we have, radiators all over house run off boiler(also does the hot water)

never been cold (we are in scotland, near where rhubarb is trying to go I think)

Hubby is oftec registered and has own business fitting boilers, whole heating sytems, can do plumbing also.

trinityrhino · 19/07/2006 11:33

oil company comes an fills it up when you get low or you ask them to do a top up evey four weeks if you think you might forget

Squarer · 19/07/2006 11:38

Whilst we do have gas, our central heating is pointless, so we have a multifuel stove which is kept in all winter - it heat output is brilliant and it heats upstairs to a reasonable sleeping temp too (due to chimney). If it is a rural cottage it may have one already?

I think based on the winter fuel payments thing that it can't be that cold. It's paid on age alone, not ability to pay (isn't it?) so that means they are increasing in numbers and not freezing to death!

Squarer · 19/07/2006 11:39

Ohh. Durrr! Forgot about hot water
