Very briefly I heard the other day that a couple of lads who live locally and who are the same age as my dd have been arrested and are bailed until next term for causing a fire at a disused church locally. My friend's son was also involved and in fact listening to "the story" appears more involved than is comfortable. The problem is they've been on holiday and only got back at hte weekend so my friend doesnt yet know - her son does. I dont really want to tell her but think it will destroy her if/when the Police turn up to question her ds. SHould I at least drop hints that his friends were involved and let her put 2 and 2 together?

I'd tell her.
If it were me, I would rather a friend tell me what had happened than a visit from the police and then finsing out later that others knew about it.

Could you go round or invite her for a cuppa and tell her whilst her ds isn't there?

If a good friend I would phone her and tell her quite matter of factly that these 2 boys have been arrested and that you are concerned that her DS may be involved in some way

I think I'd try to warn her, in a very oblique way. It's better than the police turning up out of the blue - less of a shock.

I'd keep well and truly shtum.

You have 'heard'.
They may wish to reserve some privacy over this.
You telling them won't forstall the visit by the police.
It isn't actually your business.

jampots · 18/07/2006 13:33

I havent said anything to her as it isnt my business. I may mention to the mum of another of the boys involved that she possibly could broach it with her. When my friend's dh was arrested for DD the children were frightened to death and my pal was beside herself yet they all knew he drank and drove. She is coming round in a bit for me to help her with a letter, so I'll try and work out if she knows.
