Every time i press a punctuation key eg forward slash or comma a stupid search bar pops up along the bottom of the screen and wont let me continue

At the risk of sounding like a really unhelpful IT helpdesk, have you rebooted? Sounds like its just got its knickers in a knot. If that doesn't sort it, dunno, seems to have its function keys mixed up. Bet someone more use than me will come along soon.

Uninstall any browser toolbar add-ons; check for spyware; check NUM LOCK isn't locked.

Sounds like you have google/msn search toolbar installed.

Uninstall it.
