but does a dishwasher and a washing machine heat it's own water or does it use hot water from the tank? Only my boiler has packed up so no hot water but have 3 loads of washing to do, plus a full dishwasher.

My washer heats its own water.
I AM the dishwasher in ours - if boiler packed up (not me) then I'd have to boil a kettle

I think most dishwashers heat their own - washing machines can vary - do they have one hose or two going into the back? If there's a red and blue hose, those will be hot and cold. Not sure if one that takes in hot water will also heat it up a bit more.

ours heats it's own.

Depends what type you have, you can buy both.

Dishwashers are normally cold feed only, but washing machines can be either.

Can you normally hear your boiler heat up when you are running your washing machine? (that would only be if its a combi i s'pose.)

Ah. OK maybe I'll wait until the plumber comes round later this afternoon. Thanks anyway ladies. (guess no house work gets done so I'll just have to hang around here .)
