I cannot be the only one. I read about how you all mollycoddle your kids with frozen juice, ice-packs and the like.

Mine get a simple sandwich, yoghurt, fruit and sports bottle of water, take it or leave it.

Go on report me

is there meat in the sandwich?

mythumbelinas · 05/07/2006 16:31

yup, i use ice packs

compo · 05/07/2006 16:31

I was thinking the same thing. Never had ice packs etc in my day.... Lukewarm ribena and curling cheese and pickle sandwiches never did me any harm growing up....

marthamoo · 05/07/2006 16:33

Yup, I always put an ice pack in - chicken sandwich in this heat sitting in a hot corridor for 4 hours without an ice pack - recipe for a nasty bout of something or other, I reckon. I wouldn't buy a sandwich in shop that had been kept in those conditions so I wouldn't expect my kids to eat one.

sugarfree · 05/07/2006 16:33

Oh god! Go on report me too then, you might as well,I don't do anything right according to the MN 'rules'lately.

Feistybird · 05/07/2006 16:33

don't use them.

Feistybird · 05/07/2006 16:34

do I look bovvered?

tortoise · 05/07/2006 16:34

Mine get a frozen frube! And i freeze a drink but it doesnt fit in the lunch box.

SoMuchToBits · 05/07/2006 16:35

No, we like nice, warm sandwiches in our house. My absolute favourite is cheese and tomato, left in a nice warm place for several hours. Mmmmmm....

My ds has never had an ice pack in his packed lunch. He has never complained and never had food poisoning.

Beauregard · 05/07/2006 16:35

only started using them recently when i realised everyone else was.

puddle · 05/07/2006 16:36

It's never occured to me either. although my ds has had frozen yoghurts this week to keep things cool and his lunchbag is a coolbag....

marthamoo · 05/07/2006 16:36

Yes, I want all your names and addresses so I can report you to the Packed Lunch Department of Social Services asap. I don't care what you do with your sandwiches - but yes I do put icepacks in mine I also pack a picnic with loads of ice packs.

foxinsocks · 05/07/2006 16:37

I don't put them in if the sandwich isn't meat or fish but I do if it is

Those packed lunches sit in a warm classroom for hours and I wouldn't be happy with meat that had been left in those conditions.

marthamoo · 05/07/2006 16:38

Plus, warm drinks are horrible - much nicer cold.

i went to a school that was packed lunches only, we never, none of us, had a chilled lunch and I do not know of one case of food poisoning in 300 children in 7 years.

TinyGang · 05/07/2006 16:40

Well in my day (Monty Pythonesque reminiscence alert) we didn't even have packed lunches. I used to walk around a mile home all alone and have non ice-packed warm curly sandwiches left for me at home by my mum (who was at work), then walk back. I was 8 or 9.

Yes, I do the pack thing now though for mine...if I remember that is. I try and steer clear of warm yogurts though - they look like potential vomit time bombs to me

foxinsocks · 05/07/2006 16:41

you were probably all eating dripping sandwiches and chocolate biscuits

KBear · 05/07/2006 16:43

yep, I do - two actually. Weighs a ton! Warm sandwiches = upset stomach IMO but do carry on as you were, I'm not judging !!!!

singersgirl · 05/07/2006 16:43

Only if they're having meat or fish sandwiches - otherwise I just keep the cool bag in the fridge with packed lunch in overnight.

I often put in frozen tinned fruit or frozen chicken/meatballs, and wait for it to defrost by lunchtime.

Mercy · 05/07/2006 16:43

No icepacks here either. But supposedly the lunch bag is a cool bag too. dd says it's still all ok by 12.

WellKnownMemorablePeachyClair · 05/07/2006 17:00

The cool bag appears to be enough, no problems yet.

(Mind you we also don't have a fridge at ALL, justa chest freezer, so most things are warm friendly)

glassofwine · 05/07/2006 17:04

Yep, I do, bought a pack of three little ones from Woolies picnic section, pink, blue and orange. I have two girls and a boy - they insist on having them in now. As the ice packs are only small they don't weigh much and are probably defrosted by lunchtime, but make me feel better.

Alan · 05/07/2006 17:06

NO I DONT!

But i have tyo at the summer playschemes as they insist

sunnydelight · 05/07/2006 17:11

I put a frozen frube into the box with the sandwich which I reckon does the same thing. Please don't make me give DS2 something else he could lose
