Oooh! Oooh!
Do you think that's where 'Iron Maiden' got their name?

Funny to name a heavy metal band after laundry equipment.Hmm,maybe they were being ironic or something.

meowmix · 29/06/2006 16:03

cor thanks welshmum! see - you really can find out everything on mumsnet

MrsJohnCusack · 29/06/2006 16:04

sugarfree, an iron maiden was an instrument for torture I'm afraid
As indeed could one of these be maybe, depending on your attitude towards washing....

Whizzz · 29/06/2006 16:04

Not so much of a utility room more of a small utility space (utility = any old junk)

I have orchard, conservatoire, not yard but paved seating area, extended utility room, though I seldom go in there as au pair does most of that sort of thing, Green and Blacks chococlate, probably round about a million pounds, yes round about there last time I looked. We don't have a jacquzzi, but we do have a spa room in the other side of the house. It doesn't get used that much, I must say. I told my dh it was a bit wasteful.

Do I win a prize?

serenity · 29/06/2006 16:11

an iron maiden

Welshmum - we call it a horse (well, a clothes horse} too, and we're definitely not welsh.

Issymum · 29/06/2006 16:13

We have a laundry room - washing machine, tumble drier, sink, a naff range of 1970s cupboards and an airer/sheila maid or whatever the thing is called and boxes for dark washing, light washing and ironing.

Love it love it love it.

Sorry.

zippitippitoes · 29/06/2006 16:14

we have stairs from the first floor landing which lead up to a toilet and nothing else..now there's posh for you

sweetkitty · 29/06/2006 16:15

Would love a utility room would put the washer in there, buy a drier (we have no room for one) and the cat litter trays, I would be in heaven!

expatinscotland · 29/06/2006 16:17

to have space for the dryer so it's not doubling as a bedside table w/the vent hose hanging out the window. yeah, that'd be cool.

Tortington · 29/06/2006 16:27

i have one in the garden house where the maid sleeps

Mirage · 30/06/2006 08:10

I did have one in my lovely terrace house. We now live in a crappy semi, half the size with no utility.(but we do have a conservatory & garage now though

Anchovy · 30/06/2006 08:31

We do have a Utility room and it is my favourite room in the house. Washer and drier and clothes airer, extra sink, room for boots and shoes, cupboards for things you begrudge space in the kitchen like vases and all those mad bulky present that may be useful one day like breadmakers and slow cookers. Lots of pegs for coats. Goldfish. Children's book bags. Cleaning stuff. Door to the back garden. Oooh - love it.

Orchards, on the other hand, are in short supply in SW London

eidsvold · 30/06/2006 09:12

strangely everyone has one of those even if it is just a utility space in a flat - was stunned when I moved to the UK and the washing machine was in my Kitchen Love my laundry - big enough for lots of storage, washing maching and twinlaundry tubs. When we get to redoing down stairs - going to put more cupboards in to have a wall of storage and a folding bench.

Also have one of these in the garden holds a weeks worth of washing for four people. Also holds tonnes of terry squares, liners and wipes.

sugarfree · 30/06/2006 17:53

You're in Australia aren't you?
My sil is Australia and thinks it is disgusting to have dirty laundry in the kitchen. She also thinks washing up bowls are bizarre.

nikkie · 30/06/2006 18:01

I have in my crappy terrace!

bluebear · 30/06/2006 18:02

I've got a utility room - had it built a couple of years ago - not enormous but big enough for washer, tumbler, sink, shelves for cleaning stuff, nappy bucket, and a sheila maid on the ceiling.
Totally love it - but would love it even more if I had a better tumble dryer as the one I have makes so much condensation I have to leave the utility room door open, and then the noise travels.

hulababy · 30/06/2006 18:05

I have a utlity room. It is only small. Has the washer and dryer in there, plus a small cupboard and a shelf. Keep the hoover, ironing board and airer int here too. Also keep a kettle, a mini table top fridge (beer, wine and milk), cups and tea making stuff - for use when in the garden.

puff · 30/06/2006 18:08

We have a small utility room - houses w machine, tumble dryer, a shelf with baskets so I can sort washine a la Anthea and double freezer.

Tis a marvel

Mistymoo · 30/06/2006 18:22

No we dont.
But want one in next house
And an orchard.
And a paddock would be nice.
And it will have rafters

Rafters are the bits of wood that hold the roof up basically. Most folk have them. Sensible folk nail plasteroard to them cos the majority of them aint that pretty to look at.

Ye olde worlde oake beams on display is where you'll see rafters.

Blandmum · 30/06/2006 18:38

We call ours the 'Futility' room

sparkler1wantsaconservatory · 30/06/2006 20:20

ahem Mistymoo - watch it!!!!

LucyCampCat · 30/06/2006 20:26

nope no utility room here, washing machine in the kitchen tumbledrier in the garage and yes we have a maiden and a 'whirly-gig' like eidsvold that dd2 spins herself round on in the garden until she can't stand up.

Northerner · 30/06/2006 20:27

These threads really made me giggle. Sparkler1 you took it all in good faith I see!
