don't admit to reading it - he will wonder what else you have read and lose trust
I would

Orinoco... I've worked in the construction industry with a company tendering jobs. My boss would have thanked me for coming forward and heloing them win the tender.... BUT totally distrusted me once they'd got the signiture on the dotted line.

Is there anyway you can find out innocently what jobs they are bidding for? A database?

ScummyMummy · 25/06/2006 22:20

Agree- you can't say anything. How annoying though!

is it not ok that you were in his office?
i don't get this, cos in the office where i work, if something is printed out and left on a desk, then it's not confidential and anyone can look at it.
if it were my office/ my boss - i'd definately explain why i was in his room, and say 'i saw that email on your desk and i'd love to work with you on it'...

does he have a place to put confidential papers? if so wouldn't he have if you shouldn't have seen it?
how come he doesn't know that you have prior knowledge of this area of work?

Blondilocks · 25/06/2006 22:32

Can't you say something along the lines of "I read something in the press about something to do with the area" or "i'd been discussing with so & so" ? Don't know if this would be possible, but I wouldn't say that I read the e-mail.

Earlybird · 25/06/2006 22:36

I wouldn't say anything. As others have stated, he'll wonder what else you may have seen, and if you actively snooped. Let it go, and then when the work/project is being discussed, you could say something like "well, you probably don't know this, but I actually have knowledge/experience in this area and would be willing to help if you would like me to"....

Are there meetings where new projects/ways of expanding the business are discussed? If so, that might give you the opportunity to reveal your hidden knowledge without giving away your discovery.
