are we supposed to haggle with plumbers?

Are they like double glazing salesmen and you have to negotiate the price with them? Or is it rude to ask plumbers to drop their price. He was a nice guy and i dont want to insult him.

Basically I need all 8 of my (smallish) radiators replaced and have the whole system powerflushed. I've got a quote for just over £1700 . We were expecting it to be less really.

Any comments gratefully received about the haggling and also about the price he has quoted because maybe I am being a
complete tightwad !

You need to get more than one quote - then you can haggle more easily

I have just had 2 new radiators and valves changed on 6 others and that cost about 400 pounds

Oh I will definitely get another quote now. He did seem nice and trustworthy though so maybe thats worth a bit extra.

I am rubbish at haggling and so is Dh

yeah, get a few quotes, if you are using old pipework its a straight forward job - radiators cost between 40 and 90 quid each if theyre plain white double panel. and it takes less than a day to do the whole lot.

Thanks for the replies. Anyone else got any thoughts ?

I think I will be brave and ask him to knock 10% off. The worse thing that can happen is he laughs in my face.
